Question Gas milage with the CC305, CC502, or Hotcam?

Just one more piece to the puzzle to maybe help me pick between one of these three cams.

Anyone see huge decreases in their gas milage with any of these three cams. What milage do you get?

Thanks,
Dan

I noticed a slight decrease, but I'm not sure if thats because I get on it so much more, hehe. By the way Dan, the Jet Hot LTs are awesome w/ the CC305, that combination is VERY fast (see my post I made about them waking up the engine)

Doesn't matter which one you decide to put in, you won't get good gas milage with any of them!! But, out of the three, Hotcam would have the best milage IMO.

Not so true. My around-town mileage is probably around 14 and the highway mileage is about 24. I could probably do better with a lower rear end gear (4.10), which would let me use 6th gear again. The cam doesn't have enough torque at 1500 rpm, so I drive in 5th on the highway.

With 4.10s, I could probably get about 26 on the highway.

Thanks guys. Here are my plans. I'm just trying to get an idea of how much my gas milage will go down. I drive 260 miles per week to work and back and get 21.5 MPG with about 60-70% of the driving 60+ MPH.(highway or interstate)

My future setup. Cam, springs, 1.6 RR's, Jethot LT's, Y pipe, cat or straight through muffler, cat back exhaust, and 3.73 gears. So basically full exhaust, cam, and 3.73 gears. How is your milage with similar setups?

Glad to hear the LT's are working out so well for you FastWhiteTA.

the 230 236 doesn't have enough torque for 1500 rpm? heh, my CC305 does! I hear the 230/236 is a good cam though.

Thanks Dan

There is more to Life than gas milage he he he lol

Id say CC306 and that leaves you more room if you decide to get the heads done in the future.

Thanks, but I'm sure that I'm going with one of these 3 cams. Just wondering about milage. Thanks though. I don't plan on any headwork. If I do, I'll buy a new cam.

I have the 502.I went from averaging around 18mpg to a little over 17mpg,Thats with heads too.Not a lot of difference, most likely because i romp on it a little more.It is a great cam,I recommend it.

My CC305 gets 18+MPG with 4.10 gears, and 26" tall tires...In an A4 car with a 3800 stall converter
Eh...18 MPG for a car that runs 12.0? I can't complain

stereomandan, i'm sorry to change the subject but i've been following your quest to find the perfect cam. i have the same prereq's which is why i'd like to know why you aren't considering the 224/230 XE CC. that is at the top of my list, and i've been told it should only drop my mpg by 1.5 by Cmotorsports. thanks in advance

There are two reasons that I'm hesitant of the 224/230 XE cam. First is that I think it might make my low end torque a little less compared to a cam with a little less duration, like the 218/224 XE. The 224/230 seems to make great torque up high, but I think it may be TOO high for me. I don't want to rev past the stock 5700 RPM redline(especially with the XE grind), so any TQ above 5700 rpm is wasted. The 224/230 really looks great with heads, but I don't plan on doing heads.(just full exhaust and gears)

The cams with just a little less duration shift the TQ curve lower in RPM, and drop off at just the right spot for me in the upper RPM's. That way my daily driving doesn't suffer as much from a cam that has the TQ curve shifted too high.

Hope that answers your question.

Talking

I believe there are too many variables affecting fuel mileage other than a cam that will influence what mileage modified cars get. Consider the driver, type of driving, tranny, gearing, other mods. So I wouldn't try to base a cam decision on what fuel mileage folks get with their modified cars.

With my mods I get about 24-25 mpg on the highway.

Strangely enough my MPG actually went up after the cam change. I'm sure it's because I've been breaking in the new heads/cam as to not damage anything though. Before the new parts I got around 180 per tank, now it's around 200. Same O2 sensors.

Also Stereomandan; low end torque with the 224/230 is amazing. This cam should have the best torque curve out of the off the shelf cams IMO while spinning to 6K and still making awesome power. The 218/224 is a good choice too, but try and remember why LS1's pull so hard. The upper RPM power.
