Gas leak wont go away
Gas leak wont go away
Ok, i did a search about two weeks ago about this gas smell in my car, and i came with two answers: EVAP canister or gas cap. I then proceeded to take my rear wheel well apart and inspect. My fuel filler neck and the plastic wheel cover had gas residue where it had been dripping off b/c of the leaky gas cap. Easy fix right? No it wanst for me, after two different gas caps it is still leaking. I am cranking it down real tight and i am still sure it is leaking b/c i found more residue. What's the deal?
Gas erupts from cap when removed
Did you figure out what was causing your leak? I keep finding gas leakign down the side of my car from the cap and it is staining my white paint. Sometimes when I remvoe the cap, the gas erupts out at me! Even if the tank in only half full.
Once I heard a loud sustained "burbing" sound like like air was escaping past a seal causing the seal to flutter. It lasted about 30 seconds. I never did figure out where it was coming from but it was in the vicinity of the left rear wheel. I am thinking now that the tank was holding pressure and it was venting around the cap.
I have since replaced the tank vent but I still get gas leaks around the cap. Any body have any ideas?

If you are blowing fuel up into the fill pipe, might be because there is no vapor venting taking place through the EEC canister. The vapor has to go somewhere, and if the canister is saturated, or the lines going out of it are filled with carbon, the only place left is through the pressure relief valve. Its conceivable that the relief valve is plugged too, and the pressure is forcing fuel up the pipe and out of the cap.
Did you check the canister for raw fuel inside? Did you blow through the lines?

I didn't check the canister and lines. I replace the vent on the tank when I replaced the fuel pump and that didn't help. The original vent looked OK. The fuel is leaking out of the cap onto the paint. It also seems to build up a lot of pressure that gets relieved when I pull the cap. Maybe there is something wrong with the line to the vent?
The vent valve for the EVAP may be plugged, the purge line for the EVAP may be plugged or the tank is overfilled. If the EVAP vent is plugged it will not allow the tank pressure to be relieved. If the purge line is plugged then it may not be pulling vapors from the canister, building pres. in the tank. Good luck.
