gas guage :(

What can I do to fix my gas guage? I ran out of gas today for the 3rd and last time. I have only had the car for about 2 months and this problem is really bugging me. Thanks -AZ28

Is it broken completely, and won't register at all? If it's broken, make sure you're getting voltage from the purple sending wire from the fuel pump harness behind the fuel filter on the driver side, inset from the wheel well. If you rule that the sending unit is defective, you'll need to remove the sending unit from the fuel tank and replace it. It's also possible that the float or float arm came dislodged from the pump assembly.

Well, when I fill her up, the guage reads full, but it seems to run out of gas at around half a tank. It is hard to tell when its going to run out even though I know it goes around the half tank mark. Thanks for the reply --- AZ28

Oh.....that.

There's nothing you can do about that. The tanks in 4th gen f-bodies are shaped like an upside down triangle, so there's less gas in the bottom than there is at the top. The level sender simply measures the depth of the remaining gas, so you'll read full for awhile, then rapidly hit empty. You're going to have to live with it my friend.

You can try pulling the needle off and re-installing it. I had to remove my needles to install a white overlay for my gauge cluster. You have to be very very gental when pulling it off. Just remove the cluster from the car and try to be very precice with where the needle was laying when you took it off and how much to move only the needle. It took me a few times to get mine where i wanted it.

Reset your trip odometer every time you fill up. If you know your mileage then you'll know when you need fuel. Don't run it out. It's very, very bad for the pump.

No, not that. He runs out of gas when it reads half a tank. That's not normal at all.

To help figure out what your fuel gauge problem is, locate the connector on the rear of the floor pan under the car that has the purple, gray and black wires going to the fuel tank. Remove the connector. With a meter, read resistance between the black and purple wires going to the tank.
approximate:
88 ohms = full
60 ohms = 3/4
43 ohms = 1/2
26 ohms = 1/4
1 ohm = empty
The readings should correspond to your gauge. If the reading(s) seem accurate to what you have in the tank, the sender is ok.

And if the sender is ok, what do you do about the guage? Replace the whole cluster?

You would then probably want to also check the wiring from that connector under the car to the cluster. Assuming the needle position has not been altered, you may have to get the cluster repaired or replaced.
