Gas Cap

can a gas cap cause low fuel pressure??
I have been having problems with low fuel pressure (30psi) and even dying out(10 psi) when I turn the key on. Can a old cap cause this?

Fuel pressure regulator

SHort answer no. You probably have either a fule pressure regulator problem or a problem with the check valve in the fuel pump (replace fuel pump). I have had both problems.

You will need to isolate the parts of your fuel system to isolate the cause. Follow the troubleshooting section in the factory service manuals. It is easy. You will need to make the two shut off valves that have to be inserted between the rails and the fuel lines.

This is much easier than it sounds. One quick thing to check. If the exhaust emits a puff of black smoke when it first starts, this is a sign of fuel leaking though the pressure regulator diaphram into the intake manifold causing it to run rich until the pooled fuel is burnt off.

pull the vaccum line that runs fro mthe regulator to the intake manifold and make sure it is dry inside. I not, replace the regulator.

Put a pressure guage on the fuel line schrader valve and check for a steady pressure reading. Does anybody remember the proper pressure?

In order to be sure of the cause, you will need the valve setup to isolate the parts of the fuel system.

Good luck.

Re: Fuel pressure regulator

Just to let you know that all of the fuel components have been replaced and the car has not been driven yet just started to do tunning. Are there any other suggestions?

The two items I mentioned are the only thing that affects fuel pressure except for an obvious external fuel leak and a leaking injector. The fule line shutoff valves will help you determine if the injectors are leaking also. THe procedure in the factory service manuals are excellent. I don't have mine with me at the moment but if you need info, reply to the thread and I'll get it to you.
