Gain from power steering removal?

Just wondering if there would be any performance gains from removing the power steering pump? I've already removed the AC, and am relocating the alternator..Anybody?

Other than weight I cant see any gains. Switch to a manual rack and clear up some space plus pull some weight off the front. I would only worry about that in a full race setup.

You might see some small gains by removing it and freeing up some of the parasitic loss that the engine accessories present. You could get the same effect by just removing your serpentine belt prior to your runs on the drag strip and still keep a functional power steering system.

It sucks scooting around in tight slow moving areas with no power steering! I had a car with out it before and you get used to it pretty quick but you cant fly out of parking spaces because it takes too long to turn the wheel after backing up.

You shouldn't fly out of parking spaces to begin with.

Don't know what we ever did without power back in the 50-60's.

GMHTP pur an aftermarket power steering pump on an lt1 and saw around 5-7 rwhp. I'd imagine bypassing it completely would add more...

If you decide to pull the belt you need to make sure your voltage doesn't drop; hard to make power if your ignition system can't keep up.

You also had rail thin tires along with a steering rack that made it tolerable.

Not sure how this could be possible? Assuming the pump has only the parasitic power loss mentioned above as there should be no load on pump unless you are turning the wheels. I would imagine large overall time\HP gain for an autoX car that is continually turning, but for a drag car I wouldn't imagine anything more than 1-2hp for parasitic loss max. This is operating under the assumption the pump is indeed in bypass when not actively turning the wheels.
