full throttle after 75mph miss

this is on my 1995 firebird formula it has happend twice first i changed my plugs from bosch plat 2(crap) to autolites this stopped it for a couple of months then it came back, i ignored it until car wouldnt start turned out to be the ignition coil (cheap coil autozone special) now it is doing it again, i suspect the coil again being that i replaced with another autozone special, it could also be the plug wires, i think i will change the wires anyway. Let me know what you guys think and if anyone else has any ideas. another thing i am thinking about is going with an accel 300+ digital ignition and coil, what are your thoughts on the box, i have heard some good and bad.

Re: full throttle after 75mph miss

i would get yourself a nice set of premium plug wires and a quality coil and go from there, this way even if that wasnt your problem you know for a fact its not that so your not guessing then you can move on to something else, ie fuel filter, fuel pressure, timing, opti

You said that you changed plugs and this fixed it until a couple months later. Then you changed the ignition coil and this fixed it for how long? So first it would have seemed to be the plugs that were the problem, then the problem would seem to have been the coil, and now the same problem is back again. Is the problem always identical; a periodic miss at high rpm's? How did the old plugs look?

Re: full throttle after 75mph miss

a couple of the old plugs looked kind of ****ty but they were plugs that had been through a blown head gasket. the coil lasted aproxx.another 6 months. and it is a periodic miss but seems to do it progressively more. it almost seems like a high speed sputter more than anything, i am thinking it is an ignition problem but not sure. I am pretty sure it isnt my opti. i am pretty sure its not anything fuel related due to my fuel pressure being good, i have 126 k miles on her and she still has stock wires so that is my first guess, let me know what you think but i really need to know some good plug wires, and if anyone has any experiences with ignition boxes let me know because i am thinking about going with an accel 300+ digital.

Re: full throttle after 75mph miss

thanks for all the help i think i found my problem it wasnt anything with the ignition, however i am still gonna replace plug wires and put in my ignition box because i really want the box and need to change out the stockers. It turns out i had a clogged pcv valve not only was it causing the miss after 5000 rpm on full throttle but i had condensation in my oil filler neck because of it. thats the last thing i wouldve thought of i was expecting higher price items lol, i guess thats what happens when you overlook the small things im glad i caught it when i did before i started blowing out gaskets lol.

PCV valve causing the miss; that's really surprising to me. Glad you found it; this is one incident to add to one's store of automotive knowledge of symptoms and possible causes.

Re: full throttle after 75mph miss

it really surprised me too my dad was telling me about the water in my oil filler neck possibly being the pcv valve and i was like yeah could be then we got to talking, the miss i was getting seemed almost like a vaccum leak, which the pcv valve was evidentually creating, I had no idea that replacing the pcv valve would stop the miss. but i took the bird out punched it to the floor on an open stretch of road and it pulled all the way past 5 grand and didnt notice any miss all the way up to 145mph before i backed out of it for safety reasons of course. i am gonna replace the wires and put my igniton box in though anyway since it is on order and i need wires, and want the ingition box. Thanks again for all of your help. looks like I killed two birds with one stone on this one(water in filler neck and the miss).
