I have a 93 Z28 and a few days ago I go out to start and it just keeps cranking. I can tell that it's not getting any fuel because you can't hear the pump kick on. So today, my dad and I decide to change out the pump. Just for fun, I try to start the car and she fires right up. Has anyone ever had this happen. I'm pretty sure that it's the fuel pump but does anyone have any suggestions that I can check before I change out the fuel pump. I know I'd definitely like to check all routes before changing out the pump. I hear they are a pain. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

 

You should check the fuel pressure at the rails. Also how many miles does you car have? You may need to look at replacing the fuel filter and giving the car a tuneup.

 

Do you have a fuel pressure guage? If you don't, turn the ingition to the on position, where you normally hear the fuel pump vibrate and start doing its thing. Do that for about 5 seconds--then turn the key back off---and that should create fuel pressure at the schraeder valve( back of intake on passenger side--looks like the valve on wheels). Just purge the valve--carefully---use a rag around it to see if you're creating pressure. Do that several times and after a while. If there is no pressure=fuel pump going bad. Also check the fuel filter and fuses. If it works once in a while, it may be that the pump is barely going out. Try this and then see what happens---hope you fix 'er up!

 

The most common problem with long cranking is a bad fuel pump relay or bad wiring to the fuel pump relay. If the relay never pulls in, the oil pressure switch will power the fuel pump when oil pressure hits 4psi. There are 2 seperate circuits in the oil pressure switch. On cold days cranking longer than on warm days.

check the relay and its plug to see if it has power. It's located under the drivers dead pedal.
