fuel pump going, what to replace it with and from where.
fuel pump going, what to replace it with and from where.
ok so i've got a hard start issue, and its only sometimes.. when i dont hear the thump from the pump kicking off if when i have it. if i hear the pump shut off or the relay kick out it fires right up. i'm going to check my relay first, but i'm not that lucky so i'll look for a fuel pump now. i'll be stroking the engine at end of summer and using some pretty serious parts on it, but it will still be NA. so who's got a good fuel pump that i can use. i want something that is going to work with what i have without a week of fabrication work.
Have you checked your fuel pressure at the fuel rail? And have you repalced your fuel filter lately? Just a few suggestions.
As for a pump you might check out

I don't have one of these systems, but have heard a lot of good things about them.

I've met him a few times, and his knowledge of electronics and automobiles is outstanding.
BTW, Jack I'm running some tuning at ARE the first Tuesday and Thurs of May. If you're in the neighbourhood, I'd like to see one of these kits for myself.

heres a GP going on right now for a 244lph racetronix pump w/ install kit for 149.00
not sure if you have to have tuning after installing this???

ok i just got done looking at it... my dad said it was the fuel pump. after looking at it i think it could be the relay. sometimes the car will just fire right up the way it should. other time it will sort of stumble and run rough like 300-500 rpm. barely running but when it finally starts it runs just fine no loss of power at all. anyone else think this is the relay. i thought it could have been the coil wire. the coil is new and so are the plugs the wires were changed a little before that. theres no arcs under the hood either. i dont think it would be the opti because it runs just fine after it gets started. and i doubt its a leaky injector because you can start it it'll be fine and you shut it off and start it right back up and it'll still have the problem.
i checked the relay awhile back when my coil died it worked ok after i checked it out a couple of times the car ran fine but now its doing the same old crap. we own a parts store so the relay wont cost me a dime even to check it out. fuel filter has also been changed not long ago.

Agostino has some in stock and Thunder Racing will have some soon.

Yeah Jack is the man. I just put the gss307lt1 in my car and it is night and day. Jack was very helpful and patient with me too and I appreciated that as I am no mechanic. Go with racetronix.

4 things can effect the fuel system and give you hard starting problems. Sticky injectors, a hole in the regulator diaphragm, a bad relay and a bad check ball in the fuel pump.
Sticky injectors can drip fuel into the intake and basically flood the system and cause fuel drain back. This usally causes long cranking and heavy fuel smell not to mention rough running when first started and low fuel economy.
A hole in the regulator diaphragm can be found by checking the regulator vac line for wetness from fuel. This will cause long cranking and real bad fuel economy.
The relay problem will show up on cold days since the fuel pump is powered by 2 circuits. If the relay fails the oil pressure switch will pull in the fuel pump at 4 psi. On cold days with a bad relay you have to crank longer to get to 4 psi. Then the fuel pump finally kicks in.
If the pump check ball is stuck, the fuel can drain back to the tank and take a while to fill the line again. Time to crank may be dependant on time left to sit and drain back rate.
Don't even bother to replace the pump in the tank. It is a waste of time. Get a quality pump to mount on the frame rail and don't forget the filter. I'm in the middle of doing just that now.
You will have to modify the pick up in the tank but it's worth it to not have to mess with the tank again once you do it. My choice is the aeromotive unit from Summit.
good luck to you

i've heard that an in line pump is fine with a mild motor but like for a 396 with 36# or bigger inj. you want to go with an in tank. dont know if thats true or not, just what i've been hearing
I had the same exact problem as you. I replaced my fuel pump with a 255lph Fuel pump by Walbro. Its only $99.99 from neweraperformance, Or they have it in Summit for $129.00. It is not easy to install. There are alot of guides out there but like stated above the racetronix set seems like the best out there just because of its straightforward installation.
it isnt the regulator i checked that dry as a bone in the vaccuum line. it runs like a scalded cat once you get it started. it doesnt produce a strong fuel smell AT ALL when you try and start it unless you crank forever. i could still be the fuel pump but i'm going to shoot some carb cleaner in it tommorrow and see if it fires right away that'll tell me if its fuel pretty much. if that doesnt do it i'm going to blame the coil i had this one time before with the coil. gotta love a lifetime waranty on parts. so i guess i'll try the carb cleaner in it and see how it does. then i'll replace the coil. after that if it isnt fixed would you guys think it would be the oil pressure sending unit, i mean it is one of the circuits that the car runs off of.
