fuel pump cures hard starting!

For those of you who have been having hard starting issues, say after the car sits for like an hour or longer. Your problem is the fuel pump. Its the not the fuel pump motor itself, its to the stupid little plastic straw thing the fuel comes up through. Mine had a crack in it and was causing it. I replaced mine yesterday with a racetronixs kit and starts up right away. change the fuel filter too. Just trying to help out others who had this same problem, since it seemed to be quite a few peeps.

Thanks for the tip Fozzie.

Was having the same fuel pressure problem.
Pulled the pump tonight and sure enough the yellow flex straw looking hose has a hole in it.

Do you have to buy a new pump or can you purchase the hose seperate?
Appears to be securely attached to the pump, cause couldn't get it off.

Thanks!

Shane

I'm guessing you have to drop the tank to get to it. Any one know how hard it is, I've done it before, just on trucks though.

I figured since i had the tank dropped and everything might as well put a whole new pump in there, since i didnt really feel like doing it again in a year or two when the pump went out. Im sure you could just make a new straw if u wanted too. Home depot or lowes would prolly have something. I would just buy the racetronix kit from thunderracing. I had no problems with it, and it comes with everything you need. It doesnt have instructions though, so u will need to find an install guide. It not too bad to drop the tank, i used a lift though. You can do it, it takes some jimmying of the fuel neck to get it out. it will come down enough for u to weasle the fuel pump assembly out of the tank. Let us know if u have any questions. -Michael

I just recently put a racetronix fuel pump w/ the p&p harness and my car also starts up quicker. It kind of surprised me the first time I started it up it sounded more aggressive and responsive. what a great system!

Yes the lower axel needs to be lowered to get access to the tank.

The straw tube again,

I couldn't get it to come off of the pump, any more detailed ideas on how to replace just the straw tube?

Thanks!

the straw tube (called the strainer i believe) is not replacable by itself, i believe. someone correct me if i'm wrong. but i'm in the midst of replacing my pump right now with a stock one, and wanted to do just the pump, not the sending unit, which has the bucket an strainer attached to it. but i was told buy every local parts store that they only sell everything as one part.

btw, thanks for the info fozziez28 good to know mine will be running better once piece my car back together

the strainer is attached to the bottom of the bucket.
the straw tube comes out of the top of the pump and connects in with your fuel return line.

So just curious if you buy an OE pump only if it comes with this tube attached on the top?

Thanks again,
Shane

oh, ok. my bad, thought we were talkin bout a different part

i'm not sure how it would work with that staw piece then. could be stuck buyin a new unit........

i do have a CD at home with gm part numbers and diagrams on it for all 4th gen camaros. even if it is for TA, it would still prolly be the same idea. i can check for ya later

You don't "have to" drop the axle to get the pump out. You can cut out an access panel directly behind the back seat. Do a search for 'fuel pump access panel' to see what I'm talking about.

It's much easier than dropping the axle and tank.
