Fuel pump, check ball questions.

I'm about to change out the fuel pump in my car and was wondering, is the check ball (that prevents fuel drain back) part of the pump itself, or is it a separate part? I question this because before the pump failure (10-20 psi throughout all RPMs), I would have hard starts, meaning no pressure in the lines after engine shutdown (after many hours), unless I turned the key back and forth until the pump primed the lines. Mind as well change it while I'm in there right? FYI, there are no external leaks, and I've yet to check for injector leakage, so that's still a possibilty. Thanks in advance.

The check valve is built into the pump.
