Fuel Injector Rail Removal

hey , Ive noticed lately my car has been leaning out the right bank alot , to the point of it starting to detonate. Its always done this a lil but never detonated until now. Im gonna pull the fuel rail and prime the system and see if one is leaking. Is it as easy as it looks ??? 4 bolts and then just lift ??? never had to pull it before.

edit: Oh yeah , already replaced front o2's . put new plugs and wired in a lil less than a year ago.

Re: Fuel Injector Rail Removal

If you only want to lift the rail then it's just the 4 bolt and a little prying to take injectors out the holes. If the total removal of the rail is required then you must use a special tool (Fuel rail or AC line disconnect) to disconnect the feed and return lines to the rail.

Re: Fuel Injector Rail Removal

I suggest pulling the plugs and inspecting the color to see if you have a problem with a particular cylinder or the entire bank. If you decide to lift your fuel rail, use compressed air to blow off the manifold around the fuel injectors to keep dirt from falling into the holes once the fuel rail is lifted. As you stated, it's four bolts and lift. Apply oil or silicone grease to the injector o-rings to aid reinsertion of the fuel rail.

Re: Fuel Injector Rail Removal

its rather easy... don't let special tools intimidate you... it's an 8 dollar tool from the autoparts store, although it can be tricky to get into the fitting. it's worth removing. much easier to work on that way

Re: Fuel Injector Rail Removal

if I pull out the four bolts will I be able to move the fuel rail about a foot ??? Is anything else holding it down in that area besides the 4 bolts ??? I dont need it outta the car I just wanna test if one of the injectors is leaking. I know the fuel lines reach all the way to the front and are flexible. I dont know about the electrical harness for the injectors tho.

With the harnesses connected you wont have much travel area, you will how ever have a little bit more without them.

Re: Fuel Injector Rail Removal

You should'nt need the harness connected to see if one is leaking. The rails will pressurize without the harness to the injectors. Just remove the plugs from the injectors, f=remove the four 10 mm bolts and pry gently to remove the rails and injectors. As soon as you turn the key on the fuel rails will be pressurized.

argh brainfart , I knew that already but it didnt register lol. Im gonna get some tape and number then so I dont mix them up. I should be able to do this either tonight or tomorrow. I hate to say it but I hope one is leakin , thats the easiest thing I can think of that would cause one side to run rich and not the other besides the o2's .

Re: Fuel Injector Rail Removal

I took my rails off to check them. I cant find the o ring to #4 anywhere. i assume it fell into the fuel port. Do i need to fish it out/ removemy intake or will it just get burnt up? Is it alright for me to just replace it or do i have to get it out for sure?

Re: Fuel Injector Rail Removal

I think this is going to be a personal preferance issue. That being said, if it were my car, I would want it out. I probably wouldn't hurt anything, but I would worry about it leaving a residue on the piston causing a hot spot. There's always the chance that it could bend a valve also. I'm not sure about the actual possibility of either of these happening, but I personaly would not want to risk it.

Re: Fuel Injector Rail Removal

I just checked my injectors yesterday. I removed those 4 bolts, then pryed up the fuel rail. I suck a file underneath the rail to prop it up so I could view the injectors spray. I disconnected the coil wire so car wouldn't start. Just hace someone turn the car over, and observe the injectors spray. They should come out like a mist in a conical fashion. It will amlost look like a steady conical mist because they are turning on/off very fast. I'd look for any irregularities between the spray patterns.

Re: Fuel Injector Rail Removal

I got the ac disconnect tool. It goes into the fuel line and I feel a click, Line almost comes off, but then hangs up. Any tricks to go the extra to get it disconnected.
I am using a 3/8 inch delco disconnect plastic tool on the big supply line.

Any help, have to get rail off to change regulator.

Re: Fuel Injector Rail Removal

Supply line is 3/8", return line is 5/16".

You are keeping the tool inserted when pulling the line out of the fitting, right?

Re: Fuel Injector Rail Removal

Thanks Fred,
As it turned out, I went down to Napa and bought a metal fuel removal tool.
The lines came right off easily. Those plastic removal tools are not good.
Simple fix. You need good tools, not plastic junk.
