fuel gage reads incorrectly

I was wondering if there is any fix for improper fuel reading. My tank says it is on half a tank when it is really empty. Do I need to pull the fuel pump or could it be a sensor. If i need to pull the pump is there anyone who knows where i can get a new float or do i need a whole new assembly. thanks

Could be a couple things...a bad fuel sending unit will do that and you could also have something wrong with the IP cluster that would cause that. Also, we had a rare instance in our shop that a truck came in complaining of that problem and their fuel tank was literally imploded because their EVAP canister was clogged full and it was creating a tremendous vacuum in the tanking and sucking it in!!! Strange, but I guess in rare instances it can happen, although I find that almost impossible to happen considering the location of the canister on these cars.

Did you run the car out of gas?

When this happens, something gets screwed up & changes the reading.

I filled the car up, opened the cluster, & moved the needle so that it read full when running. Problem solved, works fine.

the needle reads full when i fill the tank but it fluctuates and usually wont go past half a tank. I go to the gas station and fill it up and it takes a full tank of gas when it reads half a tank. what should i do first to fix this problem?

Cool

There is an adjuster torx screw on the sending unit. Too bad you have to drop the tank to get to it .

After my fule pump install I tightened the torx screws too much and now my gauge is off. I might try to just re-calibrate the needle...sure sounds like a lot less work! .

My car, and most stock LT1s I'd say, read 1/2 full when they have about 1/3 tank. Unfortunately they just dont read linearly, I thought the LS1 sender was calibrated to fix this, but I dont know for sure.

If this sounds about right for your car, then its normal. If you are under 5gal or so though and it says 1/2 tank, then your sender may be stuck or is going bad. If you run the tank dry often, this is hard on the fuel pump and can affect the sender as well, once in awhile the FIRST time someone runs a tank dry they fry the pump that first time.
