Bottom? Thats the oil pan gasket. Its one piece and wraps around/up from the pan rail.

Did it rip pulling the cover off? its really typical to happen. We tore mine while swapping the cam and said there was no way were were going to drop the pan, so I slabbed it up with rtv and bolted it back together. It leaked quite a bit but didn't pour, figure I will do it right now that the motor is apart.

There is a gasket that is shaped like a horseshoe that goes behind the top part of the cover, the bottom is actually the lip of the pan gasket.

No way around it with these motors, lowering the front portion of the pan an inch or so is necessary to avoid damaging the pan seal. Wish it was as easy as LS1 motors, where you don’t have to think about the pan and intake.

yeah it ripped when i did the optispark and electric water pump install. but i put it back together and it didnt leak oil so i thought that was how it was made.... but looking at it i see how it goes now. i actually have the engine out and i am rebuilding it due to a spun rod bearing.
