Friend got a 96 cobra how does it compare to a lt1?

My buddy got a 96 cobra last week (manual 5 speed) in excellent shape. He told me it had 305hp. How does this car compare with my 95 formula? Are these cars stock quicker than lt1's? . This is his first manual so im teaching him the ropes on driving. I drove it the other day before he told me the hp numbers and it didn't feel any stronger than my car. Hopefully we can race soon. He used to have a 94 gt and it was no contest when we raced

thanks

lol, just wait till a fast one pulls up next to you. You might have to eat your words.

I drove a 97, don't know if they have the same engine. It felt pretty fast. The only 96 cobra I've raced blew me away, but he had a blower so it was unequal.

my roomate has one, pulled a 13.87 in it bone stock. I think that probably puts it right around an LT1.

96-98 all had same engine DOHC 4.6, fairly quick, but lacking until higher RPMs.. should be about equal with lt1.

It would be a very close race. It depends basically on the driver. Since you said your teaching him how to drive one i would say you could probably take him. Though i think the cobra's are slightly faster then a lt1 in stock form.

In my opinion, the 03 Cobra was the best Cobra Ford did. All the others suxor. Specially a 96 cobra, lt1 mauls it

Thanks for the replies everyone. Im not too worried about him beating me in that car he can't drive to well I would have never thought they had 305hp. I guess i shouldn't take those cobras lightly (with the right driver of course)

the cobras are pretty quick stock, but just dont seem to have the torque of an lt1. This is a great thing for you if you can drive and get him of the line real good. Most of the older body style cobras i have ever ran across(94-98) i have not had a problem with. But that doesnt really say anything. Put in a CAI, ORP,and cutout and it will be no contest. I didnt read your mods so sorry if i repeated any.

Plz note, the cobras are nothing to laugh about. Yeah the 94-98 gt's are SLOW, but thats not the case with the cobra so watch it. Just dont race him on the highway. He may pull you a LITTLE, but not much..

The 4.6 DOHC Cobras are a joke if you are racing from a stop. The only thing you have to worry about is on the higway, simply because they are a heavy breathing motor. I had 2 buddies that used to have them, it was no contest when we went from a stop or a 10 mph roll. And it wasn't driver, because we were all good drivers. I couldn't make their cars beat mine with me driving theirs and they had no problem killing me with my car. Of course, this is leaving out the 03 S/C 4.6 DOHC.

My buddy bought his 97 Slobra a month before I bought my 97Z. About 2 months aftyer I bought my car we went to the tracks. I raced him 4 runs. Beat him every single time. The closest he came to me was a 14.37. I ran a 14.19. The only time he picked up ground on me was at the very end. I could see him making a little ground (in my rear view mirror of course).
