fresh 383 not starting
fresh 383 not starting
I just put my newly built low compression blower motor in my 93 z28. I have a crane 6al box and there was no power to the coil and it seems like the box was not working so we bypassed it and got it to fire. Now it fires but wont start, it stumbles a bit acts like it wants to start but doesn't then my battery runs down and i have to wait. The gas in the tank is over a year old could this be the problem? I know there is gas to the injectors but it just wont start. I believe the gas has gone bad and i need to siphon it out and put fresh in. My question is do you guys think this is the problem?

I'm pretty sure. It's a 93 so i lined the splines up on the end of the cam and the opti while it was on top dead center then i check its orientation with the cap and it was on cylinder 1. I dont know what it could be.
Speaking in general terms for a SBC...Usually it would be positioned pretty close to the #1 distributor tower but that depends if #1 TDC was compression stroke (valves closed) or not, because if it was exhaust stroke, then #6 would be firing. If you had that mistake, then you would hear a lot of popping and random firing, but I'm not sure if you can do that with an opti or not. The only other thing that seems like that would be timing chain not positioned correctly. Then the engine would crank funny and have spark but not have correct timing and bad compression.
As far as bad gas goes, when I had a carbuereted bike, the gas in the carb bowls would go bad in about 3 weeks of not using it then it would be hard to start. This was due to the venting and the combustibles evaporating. So I used starting fluid to get it going then it would run OK after the bad gas ran out of the bowls and it was replaced with better gas form the tank. I store my cars, but for maybe 6 months at the most and never have a starting issue, but I can't say what a year would be like. Maybe do your plan and get the old gas out and some fresh gas in there and good luck with that being a simple problem. Bad gas WILL make a car run like crap.
After I rebuilt my engine, I used the in-tank pump to just pump all the old gas out of the tank using the grey wire in the wiring harness to +12 Volts to turn the pump on and a tube form the fuel line going into a gas can. Don't go too long doing this it and burn out the pump though. Just get most of the gas out and replace it with fresh gas - that will work if gas was your problem.

Get the "odd" key spline in the correct position, and you don't have to worry about where the rotor is pointing, or where the crankshaft is. It is too easy to insert the splines in the incorrect alignment.
