Freaky starting

It started a while ago, but is now getting worse.
Go to start the car, it takes real effort to get the key past the lock position. Then once you get it past it, a few times when I tried to start it it just sat there, no power going to starter. I would hold it in start for a few seconds and then it would start cranking. Now it seems I've got to start it, and then pull the key back a little bit towards lock or else the power will die and the engine will stop. It seems like all the positions are messed up and its only a matter of time before nothing works. I'm not very familiar with how anything in the steering column works.
But anyway, Advance Auto says that there is an ignition lock cylinder and an ignition starter switch. Which one do I need? Or do I need something else

SOunds like your brake shift interlock cable needs to be adjusted. Go to shoeboxes page for info on it.

Then, that dying part is what is kinda shafty. You may need some new guts inside you key cylinder thing, which i will let someone else elaborate on, since in know nothing about it.

Happy fixing Let us know what happens.

What is a brake shift interlock cable? How do I adjust that?
Anyone care to elaborate?
It feels like I've almost gotta break it just to get it to unlock sometimes...

Anyone???
I know this isn't a very common problem (or I would know how to fix it anyway), but someone on here has to know something.
I need to fix this before I break the switch or else the key

Try some lubricant on your ignition switch.... and quickly.

I ruined my rear door hatch lock when It got a bit hard and I kep pushing the key to open it. It turns out the key got stuck in there. Never came out ever again till I had to Bust the cylinder open to get the key out. The grease or whatever lubricant GM used had dried out and when I turned the key it locked itself in the open position...

Dont wanna get your key stuck in the ignition right? I know nothing about the Z28 ingnition but it sounds like you need a new ignition cylinder (or is it called switch?)

go to this page for the shift interlock adjustment...
http://shbox.com/trans/park_lock.html

try this first. If that doesn't work then you will have then been able to deduce that your ignition cylinder is totally scatched

so at, this point you can either say, i'll take to a place to fix it, since you will have to mess around with the steering column, or you can do it yourself. If you choose the latter, then i can help you no more Except, a Haynes manual is going to be your bestest friend evar

Thanks, that was exactly what I was looking for.
What's funny is now that it's half broken it starts quicker than ever. I was beginning to think it might be suspect before this started happening due to my car's wierd starting habits. I go out there this morning and it took my car like .01 seconds to start. But then again it might just be this cold weather. My car loves cold weather. I'll post results if I ever get this figured out. It seems that a lot of people are having problems with starting right now due to weather changes.
