Hey any of you guys get piston slap when your motor is cold? this is my first forged piston short block. It goes after it gets warm, but it seems strange. just wondering if it hard on the cl walls It a 383. thanks.

Re: forged pistons slap

It's typical for most forgings. Coatings help (mahle's). Forged pistons have a greater expansion rate then cast so the clearances must be larger to accomedate. Which also means increased blow by at start up.

Re: forged pistons slap

You have a short skirt piston in that 383 too, that makes the slap worse. How much piston to wall clearance is there?

Re: forged pistons slap

JE/SRP has two different forged pistons. They will explain them to you. I think there SRP pistons are more for a "street" car(more silicon in piston?) and the JE pistons are more "race". I have the SRP pistons in my 396 and there is no slap when cold. Of course, it is Hawaii here, so its about 80 degrees when I start it regardless.

Re: forged pistons slap

It won't hurt a thing IF it is piston slap.
Get use to it.
