flushing coolant from block

im going to be doing some tune up work to my car tomorrow. one of the things i will be doing is draining the coolant and hopefully flushing any debris or gunk out. im going to be doing this on a lift though. i plan on pulling the knock sensor and drain plug to drain everything, but how can i flush the block? any ideas? i cant run a hose into the shop and really do anything like that. well maybe but id preferre to do it another way if any one has any suggestions. thanks Trey

Can't see how you are going to "flush" anything without using some water.

yea i figured i would end up some how using the hose and just letting it drain into the catch cans that we have. i just wasnt wanting to drag a hose into the shop. i thought about it some more and figured maybe i could just drain the coolant. then yank the water pump off and spray water into the passages of the block that way. im replacing the water pump anyway. do you think that would be affective? thanks. trey

You can use water and use repeated flushes till it comes out clean, or go buy radiator flush and use it as a detergant. If you do not want to spend the money on the flush you can use a very small amount of dish soap (very small, a cap full). Remove the thermastat and run the engine for about a minate, the fush with water till it runs clean.

hell, why don't you throw a little CLR (calcium lime and rust stuff) in there, LOL. You put dish soap in there and you'll be flushing that block for a LONGGGG time. But it will be clean

well, if you can get a hose into the shop, just pull the thermostat to get water into the block, yo don't need to take the whole water pump off.

yep i got some tuning up to do. plugs, plug wires, water pump, opti, and some seals. so i figured id flush my block too. anyway its a fourty minute drive to the shop so it will have circualted plenty and hopefully stirred things up. just worried about any heavy stuff that might be in the bottom of the block. Years ago I saw a commerical block fjushing machine that combined water and compressed air to flush rust and crud out of the block. I thought, I can make on of those. I made a y connection out of 3/4" pvc pipe that I had laying around and put a female water hose fitting and valve on one side and a male Milton air fitting and valve on the other. both pipes merge at one output in a fitting that I can get into a lower radiator hose. You have to take out the thermostat to get good flow. Turn on the water and then the compressed air to get "scrubbing bubbles". It works. I'm real happy with it.

Since you'll have the opti off, I would blast the block out, too. Hell do the soap trick and just flush it till its clear.

my biggest problem is that the car will be on a lift. if it was sitting in my drive way id just run it with a hose connected and the drain open, but i cant. so i need a quick and not so messy way to flush it. of course ill be making one heck of a mess when i clean the underside of all the oil and muck from leaks and what nots. glad i have a mop at my disposal and im glad im replacing the opti since itll get soaked while cleaning. thanks for the replies. ill let yall know what comes out.
