Flush and fill or not?

I have heard several people say that flushing and filling the tranny can mess it up afterwards, or make unknown problems worse. Does anyone know this for sure? I have had two mechanics tell me it is good to do, especially since I just got my car and have no idea what it's been through. What do you guys think? Thanks!

How many miles do you have on it? How hard was it driven? Was the trans regularly serviced through out its entire life?

All questions to consider before you change the fluid. In my experiance with under maintained trannys, they get a service at about 30,000 miles and maybe another one at 50-60,000 miles, you aquire the car somewhere after 50+ and drive it mild to agressive, changing the fluid can be devistating, problems arise all of a sudden.

I had problems after i had my 88 caprices trans serivced at just under 100,000 miles, and it had trans fluid changes every 30,000 miles. It had burnt fluid and the fluid change ended it.

So unless you are in the market for a rebuild or a new trans, i would leave it alone if it runs good now. especially if you dont have the cash for a new one or the service now.

Mileage and how well the car was taken care of play a big role in this, if the tranny was serviced regularly then it would be fine to change it.
On the other hand, if you don,t know the last time it was changed and the car has high miles then it might be better to leave it alone.
My A4 lasted about 125k with a shift kit. I just put a rebuilt tranny and converter in and plan to change the fluid every 15k.

I have no idea how it was driven. My first assumption is it lived a hard life. IF it is the original tranny. I think I'll just keep an eye on it for now.

If its running and shifting fine now, leave it alone.
