Fixed optispark, went for drive, and broke it again!

Well guys, I got back home to my car and fixed the optispark. The problem was that the 2 screws had fallen out of the rotor, therefore leading to the rotor falling off. We (Dad, eds69s, and myself) applied locktite to the screws, reassembled everything and it started right up! So I took it for a drive around the block--all is well. I then took it on my regular test drive a few miles out the road, turned around, and proceded to do a 25mph roll. The tranny downshifted to 1st, the tires broke loose for a second, the RPM's shot through 5000 and into the 6000's, I begin to grin!...and, oh...what just happened? The engine completely shut down.
All I found was a blown fuse under the hood, the IGNITION fuse. I switched it with my courtesy fuse and it did not fire.
I suppose I will take it apart and see if the rotor flew off again. Does anyone have any ideas on why my fuse would have blown though? I just put a coil on it from autozone...is it possible the coil produced more volts than the system could handle?

trust me, I set out on that journey last week. Who has one in stock? I called MSD and talked to them, they said they're on back order "until the end of next month [June] or the middle of the month after next [July]."
I thought I had one lined up at Jegs. They were scheduled to get 2 in on Tuesday. However, on Friday they called again and said it never arrived and the arrival date in the computer is blank.

Those MSD opti's are expensive... my understanding it , that if you have a stock LT-1, or a LT-1 with some bolt ons.... a $500 MSD opti is over kill.... Look around ebay... you can find a GM opti for alot less.... just ordered one from a member... for $215 shipped.... (new)

I had one DOA and one that lasted me 600 miles.

I'm going MSD now.

There's also an Accel Opti as an alternative to the MSD.....only downside is it's a 95-97 unit, but it's also $300.

I'd check the dowel length on the cam.

I'm not quite stock (I do have a cam), but I still believe the stock one would work. My logic for buying an MSD is that I bought this car to drive it and I want to be able to drive on long roadtrips and not have to worry about a weak optispark costing me hundreds or thousands in the form of a tow bill back to my garage. I've read that the stock optis have weak material for RPMs near 6500RPM. I'm not revving quite that high, 6300-6400 RPM is my range, but again, if I'm on the dyno or at the track, I don't want my rotor flying apart. Therefore, I made many phone calls and finally went back to my original store, Jegs on 11th St here in Columbus where my buddy saved an MSD for me which was actually returned in an unopened box! Turns out the guy who had first bought it, needed one for a 92-94 LT1.

Turns out, my old opti broke the second time because the o-rings I used were not the correct GM ones. The oil invaded the optical sensor and apparently shorted it out, cooking it for good.
Hopefully I'll have time to install the MSD this weekend. It certainly feels and looks like a high quality piece. I'll let you guys know if I have any problems with it on the install or malfunctions.

could you post the link to this thread? I've been trying to keep up to date on the MSD threads, but have not seen this one.

If I had not found this MSD down at Jegs, I would have picked this up from you right away. Thanks for the offer.
