fix it or switch it
Christmas eve i rolled my 95 z28. now i have a 95 v6 5 spd, and my old one was a 6 spd... they are the same color and i was wondering what you guys thought of this, i can either do a full swap and make my v6 into a v8, or fix my z28 with the parts off of the other car. the one that was rolled, it had the hatch glass break but the t-tops are good. the roof was crushed in right above the glass and it was hit in the front right and back right. which do you think would be easier?
Unless your dying to do body work, I do the guts swap (v8/t56 to the v6 car). I think with a basic set of tools this would also be an easier DIY job. Rolling a car is awefully hard on it, and it sounds like you need some damn good body repair skills to get the rolled one back to spec.
I'd do the swap also.
I'd change everything, K members and all. Just jack them both up, and swap side to side. You could even swap vins if you want to keep it a Z-28. (You'd have to remove the windshield and have it reinstalled after the tag swap)
Dont forget to swap the PCM, harness, guage cluster, emblems, springs, swaybars.... It will be alot of FUN!!
If you take the time to do it right, it will be impossible to tell it was once a v6 car.
Is the Z28 gastank baffled? maybe that should be swapped also?
I bet I could do it in a week.

I rolled my Z a couple years ago. Found all the replacement parts myself and had a local body shop do all the work. Cost me around 2G's for everything. It would definately be cheaper to do the swap but then you wouldn't have 2 cars, you'd be back to one. If you really only want the Z then sell the v6 and fix the Z. My car needed the passenger rear quarter, roof(hardtop), windshield, hood, passenger fender, passenger door, and front bumper cover. I bought a T-top'd roof from a guy for $100 bucks, and the windshield for $50. Everything else for vairious prices. After install everything fit like factory. Now I have T-tops and the car looks great. You can get a rear quarter for $300 new, rear hatch on this site for around $150, new windshield for $500 or a used one for just about any price lower than that. Front fender for $50. If the frame is tweaked have a body shop straighten it out for you for a couple hundred bucks. Labor is gonna be your killer on cash, not the parts.
well money is no problem because i have EVERYTHING to do the swap, and i work at a body shop so i have a rack and a frame machine, so either option is pretty much free to me i just have to figure out what is less work, i'll probably go with the swap and build the bottom end before i put the motor back in. motor has 143g on the it. any one recommend some bolt ons before it goes back in? i would like slp headers and at least rebuild the bottom end. any more suggestions?
What all do you have done to it now? If nothing I'd recommend doing everything you can before you drop it in. Eliminate time later. BTW if you have a lift I'd recommend dropping the motor from the bottom. Everyone I've talked to says that's the easier way to do it. I still think you should just sell the v6 and fix the Z. Or atleast keep both and fix the Z. Then you'd have 2 cars.
the v6 has lots of engine problems... and i have another car too. (82 mustang) so i'm probably going to do the engine swap, i'm not too worried about keeping it a z because insurance will be lower, especially since i have just had a wreck.
