the quieter it is the SLIGHTLY less hp you are losing on the street. I had a Borla on my '95 Z and it popped with every supplied plate but the full block-off. I ended up drilling a 3/4" hole in the solid plate and it gave it a nice sound and NO popping. Experiment with holes for the right sound for you.

By any chance do you have a gutted cat? I have heard that they some times make the pop even louder if it was not gutted right.

Im using the 3rd plate right now. I want to hear it with no plate but i haven't had a chance to change it. I had the 2nd plate in and it didn't pop as loud maybe i'll go back to that. Thanks for the reply.

Also no i don't have gutted cats.

thanks

When was the last time you changed your spark plugs? Complete ignition could help reduce popping. Other than that, freer flowing exhuast can do this, the reason you don't hear it as often/loud is because of the muffler absorbing it.
