First Time Valve Adjustment Help!
First Time Valve Adjustment Help!
Well when i picked up my car from a guy he told me the ticking in the engine just needed a valve adjustment. The bad news is that its on the passenger side which I know you need to remove more parts from the top of the valve cover to get to the valves. Does anyone know of a walkthrough/tool list I'll need to get into this for the first time? I have a basic idea: remove cover, loosen rocker arm bolt, fit that measuring device in the gap, then from there it gets fuzzy. Any help please??

Re: First Time Valve Adjustment Help!
I dont think it matters what rocker you start with if the engine is running.
I have a gm service manual that explains the non running way. and its identical to the description above.
the running version is listed in that article aswell. loosen, tighten with no downward pressure, til noise is gone + 1/4 turn

Stupid question.
I am think i have a rocker that need adjusting on the passanger side. I am planning to do it this weekend. I have read the shbox guide to doing the adjustment. But i am confused. To get to the passangers side, i have to pull the alternator correct? if so how do i do the adjustment with the engine running with no alternator?

Re: First Time Valve Adjustment Help!
A hydraulic lifter shouldn't need adjustment for the life of the motor...so if you have a clacking noise you should first confirm that it's not an exhaust leak.
If it's definitely a valve noise then clearance has been created due to worn parts, or an improperly functioning lifter which is either bleeding off pressure too quickly, or is stuck.
Loosening the rocker and re-tightening does sometimes fix the noise, but you need to keep your eyes open for other problems under the valve cover which could be causing the noise. If you see that there's sticky oil varnish built up on the bottom of the fill cap due to low quality oil or poor maintenance, then running some marvel mystery oil or atf (research how to do this properly) through the motor to clean the lifters internally may be a solution.
