First time experience at being a backyard mechanic!

Ok, I have never worked on a car before. Other than changing the oil, spark plugs and installing stereo equipment. Today I decided I would tackle removing my heads since I am planning on getting them ported and polished by Lloyd. This was my first major removal and I was pretty nervous at first. But then it actually was a lot easier than I thought. I had to remove many other parts to remove the heads but once that was done I was amazed at how scared I was about removing my heads in the off chance that I might break something and ruin my car. After I completed the head removal I was amazed at how easy it was to remove the heads by just following the chiltons manual. I was also planning on getting the LE2 cam from lloyd as well but now I am leaning towards a different method because of how easy this was. I am planning on installing probobly the cc306 and all the necessary upgraded parts to complete it. This should save me some money and allow me to do other things, such as headers etc. I can hardly wait!

I just wanted to share my experience with everyone here. If you dont do your own work on your car you defiantly should atleast give it a try! I didnt know really anything about cars and now I feel as though I could do the work myself competently.

I would go with a custom cam designed to match your heads. Not that much more money. Why buy a 10 year old cam?

Re: First time experience at being a backyard mechanic!

i have LE2 heads and the 306 cam. SCREAMS like a madman. It is a great cam. A custom cam will give you more power, but the 306 is no shabby cam. Also look into the gm847 cam.

I also just got done with my 1st v8 head swap (swapped head on my old saturn). I was scared as hell to start her up in the event that it didnt fire up. I knew if it didnt start up, then i would be hating life.

I didnt lock down the rocker bolts right, so i had 3 rocker nuts back out on me completely... the car missed and sputtered like crap after a couple hours driving. Set them again and locked them down right... runs like a champ now!!

Good job. I plan on doing the same thing shortly, never tried it before, but if I get in a jam I am sure someone here can help me out.

What he said. LE can have a cam similar to the 306 made that would kick the CC306's tail on the road/track/dyno.
