first......second skip to 6th gear

my friend does this in his 95 m6 z28 to "get good gas mileage" he was claiming he gets around 22-23 mpg city/and 26 hwy?? he only has cai, 58 bore tb, hooker lt's and loud mouth with removed cats. to me this seems to be a little to much considering you everyday camaro, it's kept up okay but it can be better.
but the main thing i was think about was"dude your gonna cause extra wear on your tranny and motor being in six gear on the street?"

so would this be a good idea for him to do? im close to getting mine and dont wanna do anything stupid to mess up my car.

i pick my gear by the RPM........i usually cruise around 1500-2000 rpm.........usually 50mph in 5th gear around town.

i think 6th is a little to low for cruising town, unless you go 65 everywhere.

I frankly doubt that he is getting better gas mileage in town in 6th gear. 6th is a 2nd OD and pretty much worthless except on a open freeway unless you have lower gears.

Driving around in town in 6th gears must put a load on the engine and I don't believe this is a good idea.

Skipping from 2nd to 6th may be alright if you are pulling onto a freeway, but the gas mileage advantage comes from doing around 55 in in 6th with no hills.JMHO

2nd to 6th sounds a bit excessive. i usually cruise in 6th when i'm over 45mph, and don't have any hills (not a big deal in florida). but to shift from 2nd to 6th i would think would be more punishment for the clutch than anything else.

i typically do 1-2-4-6 it i'm just driving mellow.

okay thanx your you guys opinion. yeah i dont think i will be jumping to 6th neither but i do want to cruise with the lowest safest rpm i can cruise at. is anything below 1800 to much?im thinking 1,2 to 4. and hopefully 4th will be around 2000 rpm @35-40 with 3.73 gears. am i correct?

Nah you can cruise at lower rpms and not cause a problem. I don't care to speed on the hwy most of the time (don't need any tickets) so when I cruise in 6th gear at 65mph im only at about 1600rpm. Works great too, I get anywhere from 30-35mpg doing that. anything below 1500 rpm on the hwy would be just too low.

Cruisin in 6th at any rpm lower than say 1500 causes excessive load on the bearings and can actually force oil out of the bearings due to the fact that there is not much oil circulating and not enough pressure the keep the rod centered on the journal. Just stay above roughly 1500 in 6th...hope this helps

Just out of curiosity, are you sure he doesnt go from first to fourth because the cars make you do that if you arent accelerating enough.
