Finding oil leak?
Finding oil leak?
I was doing my oil change today and I noticed that there was alot of oil on the bottom of my water pump and several other places. I tried just following the oil spots but theres just too many to follow. Awhile back my instructor at school was telling us about some stuff that you pour into your engine(through the hole on the valve cover) and run it for about 10 mins then shut it off and with a black light it will glow and obviously show you where your leak is.
Anyone ever heard of this? Will it work on modern engines(i.e LT1)?

Re: Finding oil leak?
It's a valid technique and the kits are available at most any auto parts store. We used it on a buddies car and the problem is that the LT1 has so much crap (accessoeries and he's running a blower as well) on the front of the motor that it was still difficult to see anything and pinpoint the source. I'm getting ready to use it on mine as well...
Re: Finding oil leak?
Your Snap-on dealer will have pen lights and long thin flexable lights to illuminate the die. They will usually give you the die provided you buy something (or owe them an arm & a leg like some of us).
As far as your vehicle is concerned, there aren't a lot of places on the front of the engine to leak. The timing cover gasket or the 3 seals on the timing cover or the front of the intake. If the valve covers where leaking, that would have been obvious.
You didn't include mileage information but my guess would be seals in the timing cover.
