Exclamation Finding an enjoyable street cam, the first time (Analyzing the Hot Cam).

All of us have read that most people who buy the Hot Cam usually want something “bigger, stronger, better, etc” in a short time. The cam is usually selected by a beginner based on price and availability. Let’s try to put a thread together with information that would direct a future purchaser toward a more enjoyable cam. Using the Hot Cam as a starting point, what cam would you replace it with in order to achieve the following:

1. Better drivability (i.e. Less overlap, power delivery not peaky and ease of tuning.)
2. More low end torque at any given rpm up to 3500 rpm.
3. Noticeable increase of peak horsepower (15 hp plus)
4. Peak horsepower at or below 6000 rpm.

Can it be done?

In other words, for those that have/had the cam, what would make it ideal?

Michael

This thread may actually help a few people on the cuff of buying a cam. What are some of the reasons people were not happy with the Hot Cam? Was it only because of a lack of peak power?

Personally, the XE ground 210/230 on a 112 LSA looks good. Lower intake for good low end power, high exhaust for a little more peak power, XE grind to reduce overlap.

Any others? Dissagreements?

I would recommend the 218/224.Great low end, mileage, and streetability.Just a tad larger than the hot cam.

CC305. Nice mild cam with great power gains, easy on the valvetrain, decent economy and a nice lope at idle, even ground on a 114 LSA. I highly recommend this cam.

Thumbs up

The XE 224/230 is the perfect street cam. I have noticed barely any loss of low end torque and it pulls great up top. Any bigger cam than that and you start to lose your low end grunt the LT1 is famous for.

I have the CC306, but I have lost "some" low end torque, but the CC305 would be a good one...agreed.
