Re: Finally repaired blown head gasket

I will throw 406/360 SAE out there. Stock shortblock cars don't normally see over 360rwtq unless the dyno is showing a flash from a converter.

Re: Finally repaired blown head gasket

Man, Oh man oh man. This doesn't look good...
390.2rwhp 357.5 rwtq.
The car went to 6.2k rpm. The AFR was between 13.0-13.5 the entire run.
This doesn't make sense.....All I did was fix the blown head gasket, have the pcm retuned, and changed to a 52mm tb. The check engine light has always been on, but never hurt performance. My last dyno was 399 rwhp and about 369 rwtq.
I came home heart broken wondering what the hell went wrong. Well, I have Comp R lifters and when me and friends adjusted the valves, we went by the GM manual and just turned the crank.
I went outside tore off the valve covers and adjusted the rockers with the car running, put everything back together and went for a test drive.
The car pulled like mad and I even chirped 3rd gear (not barked--but chirped). I felt a huge difference and I knew the car was where it needed to be.
I called the dyno up and asked could I come back since I readjusted the valves and he said yes, come on, but I'll have to charge you again. I said OK I'm on my way. End result was.....
403.5 rwhp 373.7 rwtq. Standard

I'm an official member of the 400 club
Now who do I need to mail this $20 to or do I get to keep it myself, LOL

What about SAE? Those are the numbers that most people go by.

Re: Finally repaired blown head gasket

yea, those R lifters are picky about adjustment. If they are a lil off, the #'s always look bad.

Great #'s once they were adjusted properly though.

What where the SAE #'s?

Re: Finally repaired blown head gasket

Hey guys,
I'll have to get the SAE #s next week. I was sooo glad to see 400 something that it just slipped my mind and I was trying to get the hell out of there before the dyno owner could say that there was a spike or malfunction at the end of the run that caused the numbers to be more than what it should have been, LOL
Blklt1 z28....It appears that you came closest to the actual numbers, but before I confirm that, I'd better get those SAE #s first.
BIG Thanks to Mr. Lloyd and to all that had a part in this project of mine over the years. The knowledge of the people on this board was a tremendous help to me. Keep up the good work
Take Care and I'll post those sae # as soon as I get them.

Re: Finally repaired blown head gasket

Correct me if I'm wrong....
I have this other sheet that gives a breakdown of
TIME/RPM/POWER/TORQUE Absolute barametric pressure: 29.68 in.hg.
Vapor pressure: 0.15in.hg. Intake air temperature: 78.8*f Gear Ratio: 51.24 RPM/mph Correction Factor: 1.01 STD.
If this sheet is the SAE correction factor, then my numbers are...
400 rwhp/ 372.7 rwtq. Here again, this in on the other sheet that he printed out for me. If this is not correct, then I'll get the SAE printout next week.
Either way it goes, I'm happy.

Re: Finally repaired blown head gasket

I was wrong in the above post. According to a formula (standard rwhp & torque #s multiplied by 0.96=SAE) given to me by a fellow board member (truedualws6), my approximate SAE #s are
387rwhp/359rwtq SAE.......

-Tim....But here again, I'll get the printout next week.

Re: Finally repaired blown head gasket

What kind of head gaskets did you use? I'm gonna be buying a whole new round of gaskets/bolts when I get my heads/cam swap. Were you using stock, and were they sealed correctly?

Re: Finally repaired blown head gasket

Blind527,
I used the Felpro 1074s if I remember correctly. I would have gone back to Felpro '95 Impalla Gaskets (.026" thick), but my heads had to be shaved and I was afraid my compression would be too high if I used them. I think everything has sealed pretty good. I used the ARP head/intake bolts.
Good luck
