filing down 98-up rims to fit 95 Z28

hi everybody, I was wondering how much do you have to file? Today I did some filing for about a hour and I fitted the rim on and it sits flushed on the hub. I just wanna make sure on how much do I have to file and how do I know that I don't have to file anymore. Sorry for the stupid question I just wanna make sure everything is correct. Any suggestions and advice would be greatly apprecaited. Thanks for your time and help.

Uh..not exactly. LS1 Rear axles are smaller in the center than LT1 rear axles.. I had to dremel away the center of the rim before they would fit on. I just went around the insides about an 1/8th of an inch and they fit perfect.

I had the same problem on my car. I just removed a little at a time with a dremel until the wheel went on flush with the rotor.

The SS rims may have a larger center. I have 99 Z28 rims on my 95.

I just took a dremel and used up one coarse sanding drum per wheel. Open them up just enough to slide on.

As soon as you can fit the wheel flush, you have filed enough. All you need to do now is have them balanced.

I had the same problem. It doesnt actually matter how much you fille off, you cant really go too far. Your lug nuts are sloped in a way so that they center the wheel when they are properly tightened.

I bought a set of 4 Trans/Am take-offs from SLP and just threw them on my Z. I didn't notice anything abnormal about the fitment. Hopfully they wont fly off when I'm driving. Should I check them? It's kind of a PITA.

Obviously, not all wheels are the same. It is extremely common to have to remove some material from the inside center of late model wheels to accomodate them on the rear of an earlier model car.

Basically, if the wheel won't fit because of interference in the center, relieve the center of the wheel until it can. If they fit without a problem, then there is no need to worry about it. The fronts don't have a clearance problem. Relieve all 4 wheels if you want to be able to rotate them. Never force a wheel on by trying to pull it down with the lug nuts.

I had the same problem when I tried to put some 02 SS ten spokes on my car. Air powered die grinder makes quick work of that little lip in the center of the wheel that was in the way!
