Feeling Guilty About Removing Stock SS Ram Air...
Feeling Guilty About Removing Stock SS Ram Air...
I have been pondering a CAI for a while now. I know the performance would improve over the stock SS air box. By how much though? And I would feel bad if I removed the Ram Air set up because that's why the hood has a scoop in the first place, right? It's part of the ss to have the air box sitting inches from the scoop intake. I would feel guilty lifting up the hood of my supposed Ram Air car and having a CAI dipping down towards the ground, seeking cold air elsewhere. Does anyone else see my point here? I guess the real question is whether the few ponies I could potentially gain from the CAI is worth not having the stock SS Ram Air.

I wouldn't ever worry about the ponies...the difference probably won't be that noticeable anyway. I would leave the ram air setup there just because it is sweet and goes with the hood.
Re: Feeling Guilty About Removing Stock SS Ram Air...
get the CAI and pick up probably 5hp...
sell the ram air setup (other than the hood) on ebay and make $100 (guess).
sounds like a win win situation to me....

I was in the same boat as you...I got tired of having to remove it everytime I had to work on the car and plus it cleans up the engine bay ALOT when you get rid of it..I went with the SLP CAI and dont regret it at all..I sold my ramair setup for $100 to someone on here BTW....

I run a SLP CAI and have a SS hood.. that so called ram-air scoop isint getting any more air than a CAI unless your driving 120mph...and also the CAI is bringing in colder denser air for more power

When my car was naturally aspirated, it made 452rwhp through the SS airbox, -and- had lower IAT's than K&N 'CAI'.
Yes it's above the intake manifold, but a CAI takes air closer to the pavement, and also is directly behind the radiator/fans.
If my car was still N/A, it would still have the SS airbox, but, to each his own.

ok, heres your justification, ready? If you want the CAI, get rid of the stock ss setup, sell it for the $$ spent buying the CAI kit, then its basically free. As far as the stock "ram air" hood goes, look at it this way, its still bringing in colder air (venting) your engine compartment, so it still has some sort of "purpose". Moral of the story, do whatever floats your boat, then convince yourself it was a good idea, and you wont have any regret. LOL

Good way of thinking about it.
I was just checking out a reply on ls1.com and the guy said there was a write up in GMHTP Magazine that said there was only a 1mph gain in the 1/4 mile with no gain in either RWHP or 1/4 mile time. Oh Well.
Thanks,
John
