feeler gauge with rockers

just for fun, i want to learn to check the settings of my rockers by using a feeler gauge. i hate to sound ignorant here, but ive got to make sure i'm doing this right. (lol, the worse part is is that ive gotten this far with my car and i'm just now asking this question)... i do take the feeler gauge and slide it between the rocker and the spring, correct? and this is an acurate method for a hr setup? ive always just set them using either shoebox's method or the engine running method. so just curious about setting them with the gauge. anyone happen to know where the pro mags are supposed to be set at? if i have the gauge setting in between the spring and the rocker, do i just finger tighten the nut till i cant tighten any more then lock it down or do i still have to set my 1/16-1/8 preload. thanks guys.

Re: feeler gauge with rockers

Hydraulics are not usually set with a feeler gauge, because at zero lash, you cannot get a feeler gauge in there. I guess you could set the lash at a certain gap, then turn the nut a certain amount based on the thread size of the stud. You would have to add whatever gap you used with the feeler gauge to whatever preload you want to determine the total number of turns to use on the nut.
That's a lot more complicated than just feeling out zero lash and then adding the preload.

lol. okay, looks like i'm sticking with the old methods. theres nothing wrong with the way ive set them now. the car is running fine. i was just interested in learning to do it just so that i would know how. ive just read a few times that the most accurate way to set the rockers was using a feeler gauge. although now it does make sense as to why it wouldnt really work too well with a hr setup. thanks for the reply shoebox.
