Fans/AC issues

OK, just insatlled a new cam now my fans don't come on. However, my AC was going out on me before the install and doesn't work at all either now. Is it true that the fans will not come on if the compressor is broke? I was told even is the fans are electrically set up and working they will not turn on if the compressor is broken. Also, will low freon levels cuse the compressor to not come on?

Re: Fans/AC issues

I had a very similar problem, i never got it fully diagnosed but there was a problem with my AC and the fans were a mess they would come on....go off many times my car overheated because of this...i never got the problem fixed because i replaced the fans with pusher style fans so my turbo setup would fit in there so now the fans are in front of the radiator and they are hooked up on a 3-way toggle fan switch, probably the best $6 i spent on the car. I wish i could help you out more, but try installing a manual fan switch to see if your fans are working properly to begin with and if they are then i would look into it more, be sure to check all your relays and fuses too on them. Do a search for the manual fan switch, theres about 5 different people who made writeups on it, but i chose to use the 3-way toggle one. goodluck

Re: Fans/AC issues

The relay, fuses, wiring, etc all tested fine. I plan on getting a manual fan switch to overide the fans for the track, but I want to fix the problem so they'll come automatically on the street. Do you think the AC compressor is causing this?

Side note, would a new lower temperature switch allow the fans to come on at lower temps or does the computer do that?

I'm not sure about '93's, but I know that with later-LT1's the A/C pressure will activate the fans at certain parameters..... BUT the fans will still turn on/off by engine temp, independant of the A/C system.

Ok, so the AC isn't causing the problem then. Well, now I'm more concerned about fixing the AC first, it's too hot a muggy down here to drive without one.

Re: Fans/AC issues

The 93 is an oddball, if the A/C compressor circuit is open the fans will not come on.

Re: Fans/AC issues

What causes the compressor circuit to stay open? would low levels or the absence of freon cause this or is my compressor toast?
