Failed VA Emmissions Twice, Please Help!

I have failed emmissions twice

My first results were:

15 mph:

HC ppm: 10 (98 Limit)
CO %: 0.00 (0.55 Limit)
NO ppm: 1917 (756 Limit) <-- FAIL

25 mph:

HC ppm: 11 (96 Limit)
CO %: 0.00 (0.53 Limit)
NO ppm: 1711 (684 Limit) <-- FAIL

I researched on this forum and found I should try to replace my EGR Valve which I did ($412.68 from Dealer ) and since I had O2 sensors left to do for finishing up my tune-up, I installed those as well.

My tune-up included Spark Plugs (ACDELCO Rapidfires p/n 1) spark plug Wires (From old '88 2.8L, Xact I think?) PCV Valve and Grommet, Purolator Fuel Filter, & Purolator Air Filter.

Second Test Results:

15 mph:

HC ppm: 9 (98 Limit)
CO %: 0.00 (0.55 Limit)
NO ppm: 1201 (756 Limit) <-- FAIL

25 mph:

HC ppm: 15 (96 Limit)
CO %: 0.02 (0.53 Limit)
NO ppm: 496 (684 Limit) [b]

I dropped my NOx reading down to 496 on the 25 mph test but my 15 mph test only dropped to 1201

My Emmissions testor cannot repair/diagnos problems by law but told me to look after timing/Spark advance (which he said is electronicaly controlled, I know this is true), EGR System, or Catalytic converters.

He thinks I still have something wrong within my EGR System. any advice?

I have been getting a SES light and It got more frequent after changing spark plug & wires and only comes on after car has been running hot and for at least 15 minutes or so. You can turn the car off and it wont appear until after the car has been at operating temp for a while.

Also whenever I get out my my car (after been running for a while) I smell fuel oder, but I never see a drop of any kind of fluid

there is a wire connecor with a weather pak under the 'uner-hood' fuse Block that has me curious, it has three connections with two red wires and I can't seem to see where it plugs into?

Also this is a 94, ain't I suppose to have a MAF? or is that only LT1's (I have 3.4L)

There is a single tan wire comming of the PCM that is tied down with what appears to be origan electrical tape. Does this go to anything important?

How and where do I check for VACUUM on this thing???

I think that covers everything!

I believe the solution to your problem, and I think others will agree, is to move from Northern Va. Heh heh. I got my car there, but now I've put 5 states between us.

I just finally passed the Nj test (major pita to fix). I had real high HC numbers, so I took it to an emissions shop (here in nj they give you a book with all shops that can find the problem). Tehy hooked the car up to a computer and found that a fuel injector was leaking. Anyway, take it to a shop and have them scan it (or a friend with a scanmaster, etc can do it). to see if they can find the problem. Is the cat. new? That is the most common problem with emissions failure. Hope that helps.

If you want a quick fix...buy 7 bottles of dry gas or gas line antifreeze. Wait until you are about at a 1/4 of a tank or less and put all 7 bottles into the tank and then take it to the inspection lanes....you should drive at least 7 miles to get the dry gas circulating. Then before you get on the dyno rev the car full throttle to 4000-5000 and then let them test it. The car should pass easily. This works for every car that has failed emissions on me.
Good Luck and let us know if you pass!

Can Ignition probles be cuasing high nox?

I have cracks in my #5 Spark plug wire boot, could that cuase a problem in high nox?

I will check my vacuum...

I heard only a 3-Way Cat could reduce nox, is this correct? I need to get this car to pass, as my temp tags already expired, gonna see if I can get an extension
