Extreme Duty Chain , Breakage?
Seems a few people are having the Extreme Duty chain break, actually the big gears teeth are going bad because of where problem associated to Water pump drive gear. One guy even found a Rockwell hardness on the Extreme duty was lower than the factory gear(big gear) and the water pump, basically saying the Extreme Duty gear was softer metal and not heat treated correctly, which Cloyes has no idea why, according to the guy that did the test.

Cloyes makes their own and the chains for the General and if your engine has the oil holes ya won't have a problem.
I run one with 260# seat and 780# nose spring and have had NO priblems. Another thing if ya don't change both gears for the WP ya gonna have trouble.
The problems ya speak of is due to improper installation, not the fault of the timing set.

HHMM, just curious how you could install it wrong. If you replcae all the gears, line them up, how could they be installed wrong. I have heard of people not replacing the WP gear, lazy I guess, but Cloyes says they are same hardness. But, mine as well as others, are serialized. SO, you need to put all gears in the kit in your motor, so is that the improper install you are speaking of, not putting the gears in from the kit?
Did ya read the part about the oil plugs?

I know about the oil plugs. But what does that have to do with install. If a person takes the cover off, and puts the chain in, where does the plugs come into play, unless it was a new engine build. SOme people just replace the timing chain and gears. Why would they inspect an oil hole? They wouldnt unless someone told them.
If ya don't know about the oil holes in the plugs from a rebuild or don't check them for being stopped up that is a improper install. If the gears or chain don't get the proper lube it fails.
Do ya know if this was checked on the ones ya "heard" about. And there are occasions when the crank sprocket don't line up due to the chamfer on the snout.

There is nothing wrong with the ED timing set.

The ED timing chain is a very good product(allot of my friends use it in long distance type racing), but a few have had problems, and I am trying to find out the problem, wether it be mechanical or the person, thats all.

Good point about the oil holes. When I got my new 383 short block, I noticed that the plugs weren't drilled like the factory plugs. The factory holes were #70 drill bit size (.028"), so I drilled them to match. If you look at the back of the water pump drive gear it even has oil grooves, which I imagine is to lubricate the cam sprocket when it rubs on the cam retrainer plate.
