experienced engine guys, cam swap advice...
I'm tired of tearing my brains out using the search button to find inconclusive answers! I need to hear this from some guys who've been there. I have a cam very similar to the XE 224/230 Comp grind in my LT1. It's an SLP 51010 grind, 224/232 duration, 112 LSA, .502/.510 lift. With that cam and stock heads, I'm getting 28mpg highway mileage without a roller chain or rockers.
Not looking to kill my gas mileage but I do want a cam with more thump and a stronger midrange. I have a cc306 I want to use. Naturally I'd need to reprogram...my tuner suggested that I keep the current cam, since N/A LT1's on stock heads make maybe 15 more HP with the bigger cam.
My biggest thing is this-I plan on using ported heads. Mildly done with stainless valves, nothing fancy. Pretty much just port matching, raising the roof(without taking out the angle), narrowing the guides, smoothing the bowls and polishing the exhuast with a cross buff and taking a cartridge roll to the chambers. Is there more of an increase with that small step up in the cam with ported heads?
Also worried about the drop in mileage. if I keep my current cam, it really wont get any worse, but I'm concerned I'm limiting my power production. Also have heard that the SLP grind doesn't have $hit on the XE224/230 (although it's done well for me on stock heads)due to the ramps. If I stay with this cam, I can use my 24# SVO injectors instead of my stockers now; if I go cc306, I can use my 30#'ers. I own all the parts, either way I go.
This is my daily driver so I can't afford to have it down for long. I need to choose how I go now so I can make plans accordingly. Mods going in this time are thinner head gaskets, ignition box, otvc wires, afpr, injectors, pro mags, comp 987's, and a ported TB. I realize this might be confusing but I need some suggestions from experienced people who can tell me if the change in cam is worthwhile. Thanks in advance!

The reason I'm trying to shy away from a custom grind here is due to the money. I already have the 306 if I want to use it, and I've spent alot of money on parts waiting to go in the car. When I finally leave Korea (thank god
), I can get home and get this stuff done on my month's leave.
I'm at a standstill. Cant decide if I want to go to the cc306 or not. the cam I have now makes damn good midrange torque, but I want more top end pull too...
Next car I get is gonna be an LS1

sell the 306 and do like "jkipp" said and e-mail Bret@bauer-racing.com
the 306 cam is a topend cam. if you want more midrange power i too would aim for something a little more optimized for my setup
I see.. When I left Okinawa (stationed there for 2 yrs), I had a boat load of $$ in the bank. Spend a little too much on soju over there or what?
Kidding, but Simple has a good idea there. Sell that 306 and get a cam designed to do exactly what you're looking for. I'd say that's money best spent.
