Exhaust question
Exhaust question
Ok so when I put on long tubes I am going to need a y pipe with a cat. I know I can go off road Y pipe, but do not want to the raspy sound.
My question is did all OBD2 cars 96+ get dual cats? I want to pass Tx emissions, but I am wondering if I can get by with having one cat on the car for visual.
I will not be getting the sniffer on the car, and putting one cat in is ideal for space reasons. (Driver side is very crowded)
In my 97 stock existing setup one cat comes right off of the flange on the driver side, and one cat meets later on down the exhaust.
None of this has been and issue with my shorty headers, but they will not be working for my 383 that I am building.

All the 96+ cars had dual cats. You could put a single cat in there, but if the inspector knows what they are looking for, then that could be a problem. Then again, if the inspector know what they are looking at, then long tube headers would be a problem as well. For the record, you can fit dual cats in the off-road y-pipe. A few of us have done it, you just need a cat with a smaller overall length, such as the Pypes mini-cats. However, from what I have gathered, Pypes is no longer making these but a couple people on here have been buying variations off of Ebay.

Funny that they go through the effort of popping the hood, but don't look underneath. I have never had an inspector look underneath my car, but at least I had the cats installed in case they do. I knew of a Vette owner who had headers and no cats who was socked with a 10K fine from the state of IL.
thats a lot of cash for some BS like that. I think it is mainly being lazy and having to get down to ground level to check for cats. I don't really care it is to my benefit they don't check. Even so, as long as they can see 1 cat pokin out the bottom I think they will be cool. I think it is when they have a DOT officer watching them, is when they freak out and check everything. I have witnessed that first hand. I saw a high school kid get nailed for all of the emissions stuff being stripped off his ride. The inspector said that it passed the sniffer and would have passed him, yet they couldn't because of the DOT officer.
