Exhaust problem...

Whenever I give it a little gas (I'd say atleast 3000 rpms), A LOT of black smoke comes out of the exhaust. I'm pretty sure I got a bad batch of gas, and I've already changed my fuel filter. I'm changing it again tomrrow, but I was wondering if theres something else wrong here. Its really embarrasing whenever you go to pass somebody and all of a sudden you can't see the person behind you.

Also, Im pretty sure the car is running really rich. Is there a way to test this?

Re: Exhaust problem...

Sounds like it's running rich to me.
Either too much gas, or too little air.

Here's a few questions to see if we can't narrow down what the problem is.

Is it throwing any codes? (Check engine light)
Have you done any work with the computer, plug wires, O2 sensors or fuel pressure?
Checked the air filter?
Does it smell like gas at idle?
Does it run smooth at idle?

How much "bad gas" do you think it left in that tank?
have you put anything in to try and clean it? (injector cleaner, fuel stabilizer, etc...)

Re: Exhaust problem...

Sorry guys, I ment to put all that stuff in my original post. No, its not throwing any codes, and no work done to anything. I cleaned my K&N when I replaced the fuel filter. Doesn't smell like gas, but when I get on it, it does smell like sulfur (cats?...i want to just take them off cuz they're getting cloged, but ive heard really mixed reviews. i have a flowmaster 80 series, but i think id like the sound better and the power, but then ive heard of the backpressure issue). And the important one. I forgot to say that yes, it idles very rough.

another question, but not as important as the smoke. theres a vibration, and it feels like its coming from the driveshaft. i replaced the steel shaft with an aluminum, and replaced both u joints. its still vibrating (worse at higher speeds. at 80 the center console is vibrating pretty good). today i noticed it even vibrated a little in neutral (at an idle though).

haha, i know it sounds like i have a lot of problems, but ive just been letting them stack up.

also, when i replaced the fuel filter, and cleaned the air filter, i put in some dry gas, and injector cleaner concentrate, but no fuel treatment.

Re: Exhaust problem...

Cats normally fail because something else caused them to clog.
If you remove them, your problem will likely remain and some similar symptom will return at some later point in time.

I think you should check your plugs and wires.

Re: Exhaust problem...

I was planning on changing them soon, but wasn't too excited about it. They look like a real pain in the ***!
