Exhaust/Offroad Pipe

Well i was going to get mac headers. But after my dad talked to someone he worked with <some mechanic> The mechanic said it would be nothing but trouble and i would have leaks or would eventually get them. The guy also said i wouldnt gain anything with new headers and i would be better off buying a high flow cat. I tried to explain to my dad this guy didnt know what he was talkin about but my dad is friends with this guy and trusts him. Plus he's worried i'll break a bolt off in the head or something like that. He'll still let me get them but i know he doesn't want me too. So what im thinking is i'll get a new exhaust loudmouth or something. And i was wondering if there's a offroad y-pipe that's a direct replacement for the stock one that i can hook up without modifacations to my current setup and stick a electric cutout in. That way when i have emissions i can just bolt back up the stock y-pipe with cat.

So if anyone can help me or actaully tell me i shouldn't do this and just go ahead and get the headers which i really want but my dad doesn't like that idea then say so. Ohh ya i know i won't pick up much more horsepower by replacing my exhaust and cat but if i can't have the headers i atleast want it to be louder :P

Thanks for any help you can give.

that mechanic is just trying to scare you for some reason. most stock manifolds are leaking as it is, so how would replacing the stock, restrictive manifolds with headers and new gaskets cause leaking you'll definitely see gains with the mac mids over your stock manifolds, that guy's on crack.

Dont get off road pipe and dont get LM exhaust. Keep the electric cutout.. its far better then LM. A high flow cat is also a great idea since you wont have to worry about higher emissions and that old school stink that comes with running no cats. If I could do it again id find a high flow but for now i get along fine w/o any cat at all... no emissions testing in KS.

don't get the LM? if he retains the stock manifolds, I don't think you can find a better sounding catback. definitely worth the $$$ for a stainless catback and will give him nice gains over his stock exhaust.

Yea but my dad really trust this guy. We had him switch out the engines in my bro's first car and my dad said he really knows what he's doing. I just don't think he knows what he's talking about when it comes to upgrading. My dad is the kind of person that if he hears something by someone he trusts he kind of won't listen to me and what i have to say. He asked me who i should this guy who's been building and replacing engines for 40 years of his life or a bunch of people on the internet. (My dad doesnt trust what people say on the internet) so i told him i've seen dyno's of a stock car then one with mac mids,or longtubes and their was a gain. He's really worried about it taking a really long time which i told him it would and getting leaks. Cause what that mechanic told him is even if i get it sealed up right the first time that the header bolts would keep loosening up and you would get leaks. I told him that you run it through a few heat cycles and recheck all the bolts and they should stay in.

Re: Exhaust/Offroad Pipe

imo... You can hold off on the headers for now and keep the old man happy. I just put a hooker cat back system on my 95 t/a and deleted the cat. I paid $252 for the kit brand new from Advance Auto here in mi. It is a very nice system that fit great and made a noticable (seat of the pants) improvement in power. I may put a high flow cat on soon to quiet it down just a tad but it sounds great as it is. I put a cai on the car before the exhaust and that also made a noticable improvement. Headers are next for me. I also had a dad to keep happy at a younger age and chose not to. What I wound up with was a lack of support in future projects and a good bit of "I told ya so's" when things went wrong. Keep him interested and impress him with your knowledge and he'll soon come around to the headers.

Well my dad said if this is really what i want he will get it. But he is against it. That's why im kind of thinking about going this route because i'm worried if something does go wrong he'll be like ya i told you so and then if i want something else and he hears something bad about it, then he won't let me get it. This is just like when i wanted exhaust for my fourwheeler or dirtbike i would always want the most expensive one and he wouldnt really want me too but once i got and he heard it he always approved and agreed i made the right choice. Same with paintballs guns.

Re: Exhaust/Offroad Pipe

Also anyone know where i can get 1 5/8 exhaust clamp for the slip tube? I heard the stock one sucks and likes to leak. I think this would be the correct size?
