Exhaust manifold
Exhaust manifold
Anybody have any experience changing gaskets on the driver side of a 1995 lt1 (imagine later or early are the same) I can't get the manifold bolts in for one the lineup is tough ,two there is not much space in the rear side of it and three I have big hands and can't get my fingers in there. Any shortcuts ?Also I have not disconnected the y-pipe as I did not want to open an another can of worms, is this an issue? I lined up the holes with aluminum nails(big ones!) as that is another fear mis-threading the aluminum head.I have done some searches but found no specifics other than a quick reference to possibly removing y-pipe?
Only way to drop y pipe.
I had to take off my manifolds, to change a head gasket.
When I had them off, I ground off the studs holding the heat shields and removed them.
Put manifolds back on, and then last put the head shields on. Now to change plugs I just remove the safety wire on the shields pull them off and can reach most all the plugs and manifold bolts on both sides.

Re: Exhaust manifold
Ok that makes sense I can't see it any other way. Honestly every time I open the hood or when I see the back of Trans-Am 4th gen I think GM two more inches wide would have been perfect!
Actually I should ask when you see unbolt the Y-pipe do you mean at the driver side manifold or further down?
If I do that either way would entail new bolts no?(it doesn't look too rusty down there but there is some oxidation)

Re: Exhaust manifold
Rich,
Unbolt at end of manifold on either side and undo the bolts that on the output of the cat, down comes the y pipe and cat. Mine is a Federal car only 1 cat.
In california they have 2.

Re: Exhaust manifold
Anyone ever have problem with the exhaust studs they sell at parts stores?
I bought a blister pack of 3/8 exhaust studs and none fit the holes. Yet when I
use a 3/8 coarse bolt fits fine? They look the same size but somehow the parts
store bolts are not threaded properly and the hoot is the nut from the same
pack fits right on the original stud and the aforementioned 3/8 bolt! Now I know
why I could not get my manifold back on!
