exhaust idea...

i was wondering what you guys thought of this idea and if you think it would work. would i be able to take a 4 inch dynomax bullet with 3"in and 3" out and put it in the stock I pipe like right before it goes over the axle and then do a single turndown right after that before it would go over the axle and just cutout the whole rear section of the exhaust. my thinking behind all of this, is it will take out some weight, have a more free flowing exhaust with less turns, and sound good with the muffler and shortness of it. but would the 4" round bullet fit between the floorpan and the driveshaft? thats basically my main concern is will it fit. right now my exhaust is kinda jacked up and is pretty restrictive. ive included two poorly made diagrams but they get the point across and they are quite humorous.lol

here is my exhaust right now...

here is what im thinking...

any oppinions or help are/is appreciated. thanks!

I have a freind with an LS1 car that did this exact same thing, sounded very mean. hard to spot as well. Go for it (Oh no I reverted to an 80s catch phrase )

Re: exhaust idea...

Anything will "work" -- your best option is to get the car on a lift and just look at it -- get the dimensions of your materials, or better yet the actual product if possible, and see how you like it... What you'll have is basically a cutout...though exhaust will still run through your muffler, most people position their cutouts there...it will sound similar, but obviously smoother/quieter/etc.

Maybe you'd want to consider a cutout instead if you want free flowing... but then again, I know you're interested in cutting weight as well...

Re: exhaust idea...

you guys think theres room for a 4 inch bullet in there? i looked last night quickly but just glancing, no actual measuring. it looks like its possible but looks like id be a tight fit, also would i be able to do this with a driveshaft loop? i would think so because arent the driveshaft loops supposed to be mounted closer to the trans and the muffler would be more towards the differential, correct? thanks again

Re: exhaust idea...

Just how much weight would be saved? I'm sure this mod would really add some vibrations to the cab...which might be good for those that like the rumble!

Re: exhaust idea...

idk, but theres a good amount of piping back there and it gets pretty heavy. my dad is ordering parts for his new big block in about 10 minutes, and i might have him add in my bullet muffler but i want to make sure that stock I pipe is 3 inches. im gonna get the 4 inch round bullet with 3in and 3 out. sound good huh? then im gonna get a turndown at a local autoparts store. this will work right?lol

Re: exhaust idea...

Im pretty sure its OD....Exhaust pipes are generally measured in OD. Hope thats right.

Brandon

Edit: Either way, when you order a muffler, and tell them its for a 3" pipe, the miffler is made to slip over the 3" pipe. Just the way exhaust systems work.

Re: exhaust idea...

No, stock pipe is 2.75 inches, the aftermarket pieps are 3 inch on about every cat-back. And that is OD.

WS Sick is correct. The stock Intermediate Pipe is 2.75" OD.

Re: exhaust idea...

Hey man, I got a cherry bomb runnin against mine, thats gotta be 4-5" OD and I don't have any problem. Good idea with the turndown right before the axle, might try that. You will be picking up some good vibrations...bat that's the fun in it. And your muffler, 3" in/out can work, just glob some more weld in you gap-it'll hold.
