exhaust cutout...help me or cost me?

i have pacesetter LT's and 3" off-road y-pipe and a 3" cutout b4 the flowmaster. what will the cutout do to my hp and/or torque? will it help me or cost me? or is it pretty much just for sound? i want the electric valve for it.

When I had my cutout before the cam, it was mostly just loud -- didn't really feel much as far as performance goes.

After the cam swap I could feel a difference. It won't hurt to have it on there either way, as far as the electronic goes -- I'd save my pennies. Its not that hard to get under the car and put a plate on and off.

I had a pretty similar setup. On a dynojet I gained nearly 10rwhp and 7 ft lbs on back to back runs. One with it closed and one with it open. It definately dosn't hurt. In comparison, before I had headers and still had a cat, I only gained 2rwhp. The more restrictive your cat back becomes from other mods such as head work and a cam, the more the cut out is going to help.

I have personally seen an LS1 car gain 25 rwhp/30 rwtq by closing the cutout...but every car is different in some manner.

well i guess the only real way to find out then is to dyno my care. back to back runs one open and one closed.

Thats the sure way of doing it. The previous owner of my car gained 10 rwhp by adding a cutout, but as stated above, it can probably vary from car to car.

Perhaps it was detecting false knock and retarding the timing to cause it to lose the 25hp when it was open?

Re: exhaust cutout...help me or cost me?

Id say it helps. I have Pace Steer LTs, off road 3" Y, 3" to a 40series flowmaster. My cut out is right before the pipe bends to go over the axle. I dyno'd 11 more rwhp w it opened. I also have the electric DMH valve. Its expensive but way fun. It opens in like 3 seconds. I use it to bark at mustangs, imports and girls. Way cooler then a sound system.

i have one about 2 feet before the muffler, i gained a tenth with it open stock and i have gained up to 2 tenths with headers and the cutout open so in my opinion it helps and it sounds real good with it open

I ran my fastest time with it open, did it twice. 2 tenths faster than any of my runs with it closed.

Totally agree, the cut off is definatly the way to go as far as more performance. To be honest , my favorite part of the cut off is the electrical one. One flip of a switch, and WHABOOM!!!! great toy. Everyone I have shown loves it too.

If you have very little backpressure it will hurt low end power a little but help top end power a little. I have heads, cam, headers, dual high flow cats, and my muffler rusted out around the in pipe so I took it off yesterday. Don't notice much difference except for the noise. I feel like I would probably see a tenth or so at a track though.

Anybody got pics of this setup, how exactly do you go about it?
