What does the evap purge valve do exactly, and do I have to have it? What would the consequences be for removing this?

 

Removing it and you might as well ditch the Charcoal Canister and get a vented gas cap so your emergency pressure relieft valve isn't always opening. The concequences are gas smell around the gas, dangerous gas fumes, pollution and gas milage will suffer slightly as well
