Engine slap?

I hear a little knock sorta thing... a slap type noise. It happens even after the car is warmed up. What could it be? Could it VERY bad? I am kind of nervous, its been doing it for a week or so now.

Re: Engine slap?

is it really little? like lifter tap? pour some slick 50 in and see if it quiets it down any.

it could be a the starting of a knocking rod, but ive never heard one right from the start so im not sure if (when they start to knock) they are loud right off the bat or if they are quiet like yours.

give us some more info, how many miles on the car, how bad is it beaten on daily, where exactly is the noise coming from?

Its a little faint tap, but noticable. I can try the Slick 50, but isn't Lucas better? What do I have to use for Synthetic cars? PLUS, I just changed my oil/filter.

Does a knocking rod hit faster as you rev the motor?

I don't beat on really... I get on it don't get me wrong, but I don't slam gears to often. 114.7k on the clock and it sounds like by the valve cover somewhere but i'm a retard so don't carve that in stone.

Re: Engine slap?

yes a rod knock will be faster if you rev the engine but so will lifter tap.

and if its from the valve cover its most likely a lifter.

try whatever additive you like. if it goes away it was a lifter.

Re: Engine slap?

Go to Wal-mart and get some CD2. It's like $2.62 I have found that best for lifters and such. If this doesnt quiet it down then it could be another problem. Just changing the filter and oil is good. This is meant to run with regular oil, i run it (not in the firebird yet) at every oil change. The oil in my firebird is still semi-clear when i drain it so im gonna run some cleaner though to make sure everything is clean. If you want to run cleaner though use Sea Foam but 500 miles before your oil change becuase it will unclog alot of gunk.

Re: Engine slap?

Do they make anything for synthetics? I'd really hate to back and forth from regular oil to synthetic... wouldn't that be bad?

Re: Engine slap?

I use 5w 30 Castrol synthetic. Works fine with it.

Re: Engine slap?

Nothing you pour in there is going to fix a rod knock. Dave88LX's extreme example

Re: Engine slap?

But it could help lifter tick. There is a chance of it going away and if it does then he doesnt need to worry about it.

Re: Engine slap?

How do you fix a rod knock?

Are Rod/Lifter knocks really bad?

Re: Engine slap?

Rod's Knock, LIfter's Tap, Exhaust Leak's Tick, Piston's Slap...... A rod knock is a rebuild, a lifter tap is a rocker adjustment, Exhaust leak is a new manifold gasket or possibly just tighten the bolt's (headers), and Forged PIston's in a Cast block, or Cast Piston's in a ALuminum block.. ANytime there's dissimilar metal's they grow and expand at diff. rate's therefore making that slapping commonly known as piston slap..

Re: Engine slap?

Then wouldn't a rod knock decrease performance and make driving suck?

Should I bring my car in for a check or something?

Re: Engine slap?

It'll not really decrease perf. But it "could".. ANd your on borrowed time.. I've seen some rod knocking car's last a year after the first sign of one.. Then there's people like me whom can't leave well enough alone till it goes boom.. So.. Get it checked out.. YOu'd know if it was a rod knock.. Its a hollow sounding knock.. Take it to any mechanic's shop and let them have a listen.. THey'll know off hand whether it's a rod or somthing more minor.. which is what i'm guessing it is..

Re: Engine slap?

Yea... its a quiet sutle (sp?) slap... very quiet and above like 2-3k... you can't even hear it anymore. So i'm guessing I should change my oil... AGAIN but this time pour some Slick500 with my Royal Purple Oil?

Should I change my filter again too?
