Engine ?'s
Engine ?'s
Hell guys i was wondering a few thing.I m thinkin about buyin a lt1 from a buddy with a spun bearing i was wondering is there anyway that the bearing could mess the heads up bc i m buyin the engine to have the heads sent away and then to use the block for my own build,Could this crank be shot not be able to be returned (i think thats what they do) the car has high miles. And if not could the rods and crank be used in any other chevy motor?,If someone could answer them ?'s that would be awsome thanks
Re: Engine ?'s
I guess I will help you out here, if you are looking into Tom's motor, just remeber that there was a lot of metal shavings in his oil...
If you are sending it out to get the heads redone, get them fully redone and don't reuse anything. I had a motor that had a good deal of metal in the oil, after the rebuild I put the head back on and started to break in the new motor and within 60 miles a valve dropped into the chamber and f'd the new motor, pistons, and the head up completely to the point they were unusable..
So in other words, if you are buying it with the intentions of using it as a core and everything else will be new then go for it..

Re: Engine ?'s
By the time you hear that a bearing has spun, it already has play and that is where the knock comefrom. At this point it has gouged the crank pretty bad and usually not turnable. Unless he threw a rod, there should be problem with anything except the crank, bearings (of course) and possibly the rod. Other than that have everything hot tanked and cleaned really good like 1SlowFormula said. I personally don't see a problem in reusing any of it if it is cleaned really good.
