engine mount install

What would be the best way to support the engine simply to replace the motor mounts? (dont have a crane/picker)

Ive read of guy putting a 2x4 under the oil pan and jacking it up, but Ive also read you risk damaging the oil pump/screen that way...

thanks

I've always used one of these:

Don't support it by the oil pan.......trust me, I just had to tear my engine out because of a "knock" due to someone denting the oil pan in...

I've heard of people lifting very gently using the hub but I've never tried it and wouldn't personally recommend it.

Re: engine mount install

The best way is with the tool RamAir95TA really is the best way. You can jack it up using the oil pan RAIL if you. Hold a u-shaped device that keeps the jack away from the bottom of the pan but that's really a lame way to do it.

I wouldn't jack any engine by the hub....

Re: engine mount install

I used a lift, a pole jack, and a tranny jack. put the tranny jack on the tranny, the pole jack on the crank and slowly raised both till the mounts were unloaded.

Re: engine mount install

I use a hoist in all situations, as I just don't trust anything else...

Little 200lb 4cylinder motors I've used 2x4's without an issue, but never on an lt1 lol. Damn engine is close to 500-600lbs IIRC.

Re: engine mount install

It could slip but it won't break....I used one like that with my old jag V12/TH400 and it didn't even flex. That combo weighed in at 815 pounds....more that the LT1.
