Engine codes 16and 36
Re: Engine codes 16and 36
What brand Opti did you install?
Both those codes are caused by faulty data, or lack of data from the optical cam position sensor module in the Opti. The PCM needs a cam position signal referred to as “low resolution” pulse to run the engine - specifically to time the ignition and the sequential fuel injection. When that pulse signal does not reach the PCM, it sets DTC 16 and shuts down the fuel system. If the engine is running, it is a stored code, not active.
The second signal is the “high resolution” pulse. The engine can run without that signal, but if the pulses are erratic, you can get misfires and stumbling. This sets DTC 36. If it runs better with the SES light on, could be when the signal is not being received (light on) it is eliminating the faulty data when the signal is being received (light off).
Many cheap Opti's, particularly the Chinese rip-offs, are faulty right out of the box. Even the very expensive MSD can be faulty out of the box. There are only a couple of seemingly reliable replacements.
Also check the harness wires and connectors for damaged insulation, corroded ore bent pins, etc..
