Engine Builders need advice in rod clearance

I'm freshening up the bottom end while I'm putting on the new heads and just checked rod clearance. I'm using Clevite P series bearings and a bone stock crank. Plastigage is between .002" and .003". Isn't that a tad too much clearance?

Opinions please

Thanks
Steve

The factory manual says that 0.0030 is the max service limit and also says that production limits were 0.0013-0.0035. Sounds like you are not in bad shape as long as you have good oil pressure. A little loose will make it rev more freely.

The .003 is the max that you would want.
I set mine up to .0025 and the mains were set at .002

When I freshened up mine the rods were at .003 I went out and bought a half set of .001 oversize bearings and put them on one end of the rod bearing and the standard size on the other.

I agree with Ken here that mixing a set will get you a little tighter[it's done often]
.003 is a bit loose... .002-.0025 is good.. for SBC
