Engine

What are the differences between an LT1 and pre-1987 block? Is the Opti the only difference? Are the internals the same? Heads the same? I'm getting ready to rebuild my LT1 for my '93 Camaro and I want to get some ideas. I'm not new to the site but I haven't been on in awhile. Any info that ya'll provide will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Reverse cooled head is a big one.

Timing cover is different, roller versus non-roller, water pump (reverse cooled) like mentioned above. I think the accessory holes are still the same though.

But are the crankshafts the same or similar? Can the Cams interchange, lifters? I'm not worried about the heads or the water pump, thats an easy fix. Could the Opti Bolt up to a pre-1987 block?

i know the cooling jackets are in different places on the heads as well as the reverse flow but not real sure on the crank and cam.

The entire front of the block is cast different on the LT1. Its set up for a gear driven (off the cam sprocket) water pump with the inlet and outlets set up for reverse flow. And there is a mount for the Opti cast into the block. The timing cover is "different" only in shape, and has one less bolt in it, but the remaining bolts are in the same pattern as a Gen 1 SBC. As noted, the internal coolant passages in the block are different, and there is no coolant flow through the intake manifold. The thermostat mount is not on the manifold like a Gen 1 SBC. Its on the water pump housing.

You can not bolt an Opti directly to a Gen 1 block.

Cam is similar, but the front of the LT1 cam has a "step" in it for the cam retainer plate. The dowel pin is a specific length, based on whether you have the unvented Opti (92-94 short pin) or the vented Opti (95-97 long pin to drive the Opti). Crankshaft is the same as a 1-piece rear main seal Gen 1 SBC, but the balancing is different on stock cranks. Gen 1 SBC is balanced for heavier stock pistons, and for a front balancer. The LT1 is balanced for the lighter hypereutectic pistons, and does not require a front balncer. All the balance weight is added to the flywheel (or flex plate). Aftermarket cranks may be different.

Pre '87 cranks use a 2-piece rear main seal. '87 & up and LT1's use a 1-piece rear main seal.
