Electrical Experts, need Help with coil/ICM, long
Here is a little history on the car. Car is a 1990 rs with a 93 LT1 installed by me. It has a painless harness, pcm for less chip, and vats disabled. I have a 93 Radiator and fan setup with a painless fan switch going to the primary fan and a switch going to the secondary fan. Now I had a switch wired through a ground to run this fan. The switch was located in the glove box. At this point I found out while changing the serpentine belt that the motor had current going throught the case because I hit it with a wrench and it sparked. So I decided to leave it off until I could get home and unhook it. Then switch came out of its holder and unkown by myself a friend tossed his keys into the box and they stuck to the switch causing it to short out. At this point I think that the power from the motor has shorted out all the grounds sending power to them. The car begins to run rough and as I am pulling in my driveway it dies. So I do some research and find that the ICM is bad and I replace it with a advanced auto brand one. I start the car and it dies almost immediately, dead ICM again. So I take it back and get another one and put it in check all the voltages and signals and everything seems ok. I put it in and leave it idle for about 25-30 minutes and do a datamaster scan, and it acts kind of wierd. (I can send these to anyone who would like to take a look at them.) I drive it and it is fine, go home shut it off leave it sit overnight and get it out the next day and drive about 15 miles and it dies again, another ICM. This time I purchase an AC Delco ICM after reading about some problems with the other brand ICMs. Now this is where the car is now.
It will start and run, but I do not want to risk burning up this $100 part. I checked the ICM and it has 3 volts while cranking on the white wire, has good continuity between the computer and ICM, and had 2 volts dc current while running on the white wire. I checked these with a friends 95 z28 and all were about the same. I have also tested the alternator and it is putting out 14.4 volts and 4 amps. All grounds have been checked and rechecked for voltage or good groung and all were fine. All tests were done using a Fluke multimeter, or taking items to store to have them tested. What do you think is making these burn up, it is the only thing that goes bad, nothing else, I replace it and it starts right up.
Other parts changed with no help, computer, 3 different coils, new chip, new stock chip, battery. Now I am seeing 12 volts on the white/black stripe wire on the ICM, but my Fluke meter keeps flashing a light that says it is seeing spikes to over 30 volts, but will not register because it happens so fast. I do not know where this voltage is coming from and after I have switched to a different set up it does not change. Could this be opti related? Does it send a signal of any type to the coil or icm?
