Electric WP not running for 5min....damage?

Uuuuggghhh, I can't beleive this happened. I was working on the car this weekend, intalling a new driveshaft loop, torque arm bushing and some other little things. Also had the intake elbow off checking out the MAF and when I was reinstalling it I must have somehow pinched the in line fuse holder for my CSI wp, it got in around the CAI opening and didn't realize it when I was twising on the elbow and the MAF a bit and it got pinched. I hadn't driven the car for over a week since I was sick and it had been raining all week.

Anyway, to make a long story short I started it up yesterday and wasn't paying attention to the gauges or my warning light for the pump and went to test things out. As soon as I pulled out (after running about 1 minute) the car felt funny but it still didn't click to me that the temp was rising. I was just driving slow up and down a side street for another 2 minutes trying to figure out why the car felt so strange, like no power. Went to pull out onto a main road and the "check gauges" light on the dash came on, I was still like It finally clicked to me as I was pulling out onto this main road and trying to get on it that the temp gauge was about to hit the freaking readline I shut it down and coasted into a parking lot. I don't know how long the temp was that high, I'm guessing for a minute or so. I checked the wiring and found the fuse housing was busted, cut it out and just wired it straight through and the pump ran again. Let the pump run with the car off for a minute or so then drove it back home, just a few blocks. The car seemed ok once I got the pump running again and temps came down to normal but I just parked it and havn't run it again. There were no leaks around the heads or from the rest of the cooling system so that seemed like a good sign. Do you think I did any major damage from running it at 260-280 for approximately 1-2 minutes??? I was running Mobil 1 10/30 so I'm hoping that helped things some.

Thanks.

You stopped as soon as the check gauges light came on right?

I wouldn't suspect any damage. I ran mine like that once and the car ran fine afterwards. 12.9 Second 1/4 mile actually. But then again it seemed to be running fine then too, just hot. I would say get the WP working and take it for a test drive to check things out. Most likely it is fine. And if it isn't... It needed replacin' anyway.

If you were overheating for such a short time I don't imagine you would have damaged your head gaskets.

Probably for about another minute or so after that It took me a while to put 2 + 2 together apparently. I've got to check it out tonight after work, it happened so late yesterday that I havn't had a chance to check it out since. The most likely damage I know of could be a blown head gasket or cracking the heads, if they look ok is there anything else I should be concerned with?

Just did the same thing you did this weekend!! Was changing the plugs and inadvertantly pinched the pump power wire, which caused the fuse to blow. I was taking the car out for a test drive, had my diacom hooked up to it and noticed the temperature going into the red....

Pulled over and figured out what happened, no damage that I can see so far.. I caught the problem just as it was happpening. Like eddie said, fix the pump, drive it around with an eye on the gauges.. Also make sure your coolant leve is correct, you may have lost some through the overflow.. due to the high temps.

I'll check the coolant level and put a new fuse holder in tonight and see how it's running, I think the engine is ok. I really need a better indicator that the pump isn't running, I know the car didn't feel right when I was driving it but it never occured to me that the pump was out even with the dumb indicator light I installed The light is on when the pump is running, off if it's not. It must have never come on when I started the car and I didn't notice it this time. I think I need to wire up the indicator to something like the door open chime or something similar if thats possible, since the little light being out didn't exactly grab my attention. Has anyone ever wired theirs up to something like that???

I have a green LED that''s on when there is power at the pump and a red LED that's on whenever there is power to the accessories (e.g. "run" and "acc"). I tried it out, and when you pull the fuse out, the light goes to red. I think I need a brighter red light, since the one I have it a bit hard to see during the day.

I put all the wire for the pump in black plastic conduit (like the OEM stuff), so it hopefully will be protected against damage.

I have a wiring schematic for a light and buzzer setup to run off of the pump.
Buzzer is said to only go off when power to the pump is lost.
I have never built this setup but its worth looking at.

Let me know if you want it.

Geta...

I'd like to get a copy of that schematic if possible. Is it something you could email?

That would be great, shoot me a copy of it if you can. If this ever happens again I want to know about it the second it goes.

Just an update on my problem, I checked it out last night, fixed the fuse holder, checked the coolant level and it was fine, I'm pretty sure none overflowed. Checked the oil, didn't smell burnt and the color looked fine. Took it out for a drive and temps remained normal, same as they used to be and the car ran fine, no problems.
